Hi,

Is $135 USD enough for one weeks worth of food? I already paid for my airbnb and just budgeting for my two weeks stay here. Or what is the minimum I expect to spend per week on food if I am on a budget?

Thanks

yeah $135 is doable but you'll be eating a lot of convenience store kimbap and ramyeon from gs25. street food like tteokbokki or a gimbap roll from a shop runs about 3,000-4,000 won so that's like $2.50-3.50. if you stick to those and maybe one proper meal a day at a place that does set menus you can swing it

honestly the real trick is finding the student gimbap places near universities or euljiro area where you can still get a full meal for 5,000 won. that's like $3.70. just avoid any restaurant in myeongdong or itaewon and you'll be fine

one thing nobody mentions is that convenience stores do discounts after like 9pm on ready meals, sometimes 30% off. if you're flexible on timing that stretches your budget a bit more

$135 works out to about 18,000 won a day. You can make that stretch if you mostly eat at places like gogung or the food courts in department store basements where a full meal runs 7,000-9,000 won. The trick is buying a big bag of rice and some gochujang from a mart like Emart or Lotte Mart and making your own breakfast, then eating out for lunch and dinner. Those big marts also have hot bar sections where you can grab fried chicken or odeng for under 3,000 won per piece. Just stay out of Gangnam and Hongdae main streets where lunch sets start at 12,000 won.

$135 is tight but doable if you hit up the banchan shops near markets like gwangjang for cheap side dishes and rice. convenience store ramyeon is fine but mixing in a few meals from those older ajumma-run spots in jongno will save you and taste way better

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
