Seoul Bar Crawl or other nightlife group activities for middle aged people?

Hi everyone,

I am a 39 year old male and will visit Seoul later this year.

Just wanted to ask if there are any bar crawls or other organized nightlife (bars, pubs, clubbing) activities in Seoul for older or middle-aged people around 30-50 years old?

I am asking because all pub crawls and language exchanges I found are more tailored to the 18-30 years old age group, and, to be honest, I don't want to stand out in the group as the old guy ^^

Do other people who are in their late thirties or forties have experience with the Seoul bar crawl or other similar nightlife activites? Was your age a problem?

And I also heard that a lot of clubs in Seoul have an upper age limit of 34 years (or sometimes even 30 years). Is it impossible for a 39 year old to get into clubs?

I'm 42 and go out in Seoul regularly, you'll be fine. The age limit thing is real for some of the bigger clubs in Hongdae and Gangnam, but it's not a blanket rule and rarely enforced at the door if you look like you belong. Try places like Pongdae in Hapjeong or South of Gyeongnidan in Itaewon, both have a mixed crowd where you won't stick out. For a more organized thing, check out the Facebook group "Seoul Pub Crawl for 30s and 40s" which runs weekly meetups at places like The Booth in Hongdae, people are typically in their late 30s to early 50s there.

honestly the age thing is way overblown for most places. yeah some of the club row spots in gangnam will give u a hard time but who wants to be there anyway. check out the area around mangwon station, lots of wine bars and craft beer spots with a 30s-40s crowd. bottle bunny has natural wine and zero pretension, i see people of all ages there on a wednesday night.

for something more social the seoul global cultural center does language exchange nights that skew older than the university ones. they meet at different spots around jongno and the age range is usually 25 to 55. way more chill than the hongdae backpacker scene.

clubs wise you're prob better off at places like regime or steampunk in itaewon. they don't check ids at the door unless you look super young and the music is actually listenable. the 34 year old limit thing is mostly a rumor that got blown up on reddit years ago.

Just search "Seoul 30s 40s meetup" on Facebook and you'll find half a dozen groups that do bar nights every week. The ones that meet at places like Old Firehouse in Gwanghwamun or The Bottle in Hannam are full of people your age

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
