During those years I lived in Seongdong and attended international school in Yongsan and Mapo. But I spent so much time wandering around the city by myself too. I've since moved back to S. Korea as an adult and feel a since of nostalgia when I visit these districts but it's different now. The city I knew seems not to exist anymore....

honestly i get that feeling so much. seoul changes so fast it's almost disorienting coming back. my favorite parts are the old school neighborhoods that somehow held on. i love walking around bukchon super early before the tourists flood in, when it still feels like a quiet village. also really into mangwon these days, it has that laid back vibe hongdae used to have ten years ago before it got all corporate. the little alleyways near mangwon market with the tiny breweries and old ladies selling banchan feel like a different world from the rest of the city

i feel you on the nostalgia thing. seoul tears down and rebuilds every 5 years it feels like. my favorite pocket is the area around hangangjin station, specifically the little residential streets behind the main road up toward itaewon. there's this one alley with a tiny old bookstore and a 40 year old tteokbokki cart that somehow survived all the gentrification. also seongsu-dong still has some of that raw factory vibe if you avoid the main cafe strip and stick to the side streets near the old shoe factories

That feeling of the city shifting under you is real. My favorite part is the stretch of Ikseon-dong, but not the main tourist alley. I go into the hanok village maze behind it, the parts that still have old ladies drying peppers on their rooftops and the one tiny hole-in-the-wall that sells nothing but homemade sikhye. The main street is all instagram cafes now but the residential core still feels like the 90s, which is when I remember the city most clearly.

I also really love the area around Hapjeong station, specifically the old printing alley that runs parallel to the main road. Most people walk right past it because they're heading to the big coffee shops on the main strip, but there's a tiny noodle place there that's been open since 1983. The owner remembers when the whole neighborhood was factories. It's one of the few spots left where you can feel the older Seoul underneath the new one.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
