Why does Kpop industry discriminate avg body shapes?

tbh the "uniform look" thing is real but there's also a practical side people miss. music shows have crazy tight camera angles and the choreo is literally built around everyone being the same height and weight. one member standing out messes up the whole frame, so companies see it as an efficiency thing, not just aesthetics.

if u want proof it's not about talent, look at how many idols blow up after leaving their agency and gaining weight. they suddenly look healthier and fans love it, but the company still forced the skinny look while they were active. it's a control thing, they think skinny = easier to manage.

for actual variety, check out the trot scene or k-indie. singers like jang yoon-ju or younha have normal bodies and nobody cares. also variety shows like "i live alone" show idols at home eating normally, which is way more relatable than the stage image. the disconnect between those two versions of the same person is wild.

honestly it's not just kpop, look at korean tv in general. even variety show hosts and news anchors are super slim. there's a huge cultural thing here about "몸매 관리" (body management) being a sign of discipline and professionalism. i've seen trainees get told to lose weight even when they looked fine by western standards

the us pop industry has its own issues with body image but the range is wider because americans have been pushing back on that for decades. korea's body positivity movement is still pretty young and mostly online. you'll see some plus-sized influencers on instagram but they rarely break into mainstream entertainment

that said, things are slowly changing. check out groups like mamamoo - they're not all super skinny and they're massive. or artists like bibi who have more natural curves. but yeah, the industry standard is still painfully thin and it sucks for fans who want to see themselves represented

The weight standard in Kpop is really about the uniform look, not just thinness. Agencies want idols to look interchangeable so fans can project onto any member, and that's easier when everyone fits the same narrow mold. It's the opposite of the US industry where distinct bodies are part of the brand.

You'll notice it more in the choreography too. Group routines are designed for bodies that move the same way, same arm angles, same leg height. A dancer with wider hips or broader shoulders would throw off the visual symmetry that companies sell.

If you want variety, look at solo acts outside the idol system. Artists like SUMIN or Hoody have different shapes and they're respected, but they don't do the synchronized performance thing. That's the tradeoff, the idol machine is built on sameness and it's not changing until the whole production model shifts.

Adventure Park jobs in Seoul 2026: what do they pay?

What does an hourly wage there actually come to after tax, and can anyone realistically cover rent and living costs in Seoul on it? I'd like to hear from people who've done a season rather than the job posting figures.

The 4대보험 hit is real but the bigger issue is hours getting cut in the rainy stretch of 장마, so your monthly total swings a lot. I'd ask current staff about the actual shift schedule before signing, not the posted rate.

Image birga local ·

장마 shifts get cut first, ask about 우천 대체 근무

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Image sybilla local ·

for real, and the rainy day shifts they swap you into are usually shorter, so ask how many actual hours a week you'd get

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image babette local ·

also worth knowing that shift cuts depend on which attraction you're assigned to. indoor rides keep running through the wet weeks so those crews stay close to full hours while outdoor ones get sent home early. ask which ride you'd be on before you sign anything.

Rain cuts hit hardest in July, so ask if 주휴수당 still applies on weeks you drop under 15 hours.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down
Image petra local ·

One thing worth asking is whether 주휴수당 gets prorated or clawed back at settlement, since some seasonal contracts quietly build that into the base rate.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Image petra local ·

Check the contract's 근로계약서 hours, that's the real tell.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Image jana local ·

agreed, ask for the actual shift roster in writing

Adventure Park runs on short seasonal contracts, so expect around minimum wage (10,320 won in 2025, maybe 10,500 in 2026) minus 4대보험, which drops your take-home more than people think. On that, a deposit-heavy Seoul rent is a stretch unless you share a place or live out near the park.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down
Image sybilla local ·

yeah but short contracts mean no severance either
