πŸ› The Must-Try Dish
No visit to Amritsar is complete without Amritsari Kulcha, a stuffed bread cooked in a tandoor and served with chole and tangy chutney. Head to Kulcha Land near the Golden Temple or Bharawan Da Dhaba in the old city for the best versions, priced around INR 80-120 per plate.

πŸ— Iconic Butter Chicken
For a legendary butter chicken experience, visit Kesar Da Dhaba on Chowk Passian, a century-old institution. Their rich, creamy gravy and tender chicken cost about INR 350-500 per serving, and the rustic ambiance adds to the charm.

πŸ₯Ÿ Street Food Hotspots
The narrow lanes of the old city, especially around Hall Bazaar, are packed with stalls selling gol gappa, papdi chaat, and aloo tikki. Try the chaat at Kanha's Sweets on Lawrence Road or the famous papdi at Bade Bhai Ka Dhaba near the Golden Temple for under INR 50.

πŸ₯› Sweet Endings
Amritsar's sweet shops are legendary, with Gurdas Ram Di Hatti on Lawrence Road being a top pick for phirni and ras malai. For a classic jalebi, visit Ahuja Sweets on Queen's Road, where a plate costs around INR 100-150.

🍚 Langar Experience
The Golden Temple's langar serves a free, simple meal of dal, roti, and kheer to thousands daily, embodying Sikh hospitality. Visitors are welcome to join the queue and eat on the floor; it's a humbling experience you shouldn't miss.

β˜• Best Evening Spots
For a relaxed evening, head to Cafe Coffee Day on the Mall Road or the rooftop restaurant at Hotel City Heart, both offering views of the Golden Temple. Try the masala chai and snacks like samosas or pakoras, with prices starting at INR 100.

πŸ’° Budget Tips
Most street food items cost between INR 20-80, while a full meal at a dhaba ranges from INR 200-500 per person. Carry cash as many smaller stalls don't accept cards, and avoid eating at overly touristy spots near the Golden Temple for better value.

🚢 Getting Around
The best way to explore Amritsar's food scene is on foot or by cycle rickshaw, especially in the congested old city. Auto-rickshaws are available for longer distances, with fares starting at INR 50 for short trips within the city center.

the kulcha land recommendation is solid but if u want the real deal go to kanha's kulcha stall near the golden temple back gate, it's a tiny cart run by the same family for decades, they use desi ghee and the chole is way spicier than the tourist spots. costs about inr 60 and u eat standing up with ur hands, that's the experience

also for a late night snack, check out the aloo paratha at brothers' dhaba on queen's road, they serve it with fresh butter and a green chutney that's dangerously good, open till 1am most nights

ngl the butter chicken at kesar da dhaba is good but i'd skip the wait and go to surjit food plaza on lawrence road instead, their version is less hyped but the gravy has this smoky flavor from the tandoor that the tourist places miss. costs about inr 300 and theyre open late

one thing nobody talks about is the dry fruit lassi at gurdas ram di hatti, it's like inr 120 but loaded with almonds and pistachios, feels like a meal in itself. skip the phirni if youre in a rush, the lassi is where it's at

also if youre walking around hall bazaar keep an eye out for the guy selling bhang ka pakora near the police booth, it's a seasonal thing and only available in winter but it's a proper local thing, hits you differently than the regular stuff

honestly that langar tip is spot on but i'd add that you should go during off-peak hours like 3-4pm if u want a more peaceful experience. the queue moves fast anyway but it's less chaotic

one thing the guide missed is the lassi at bharawan da dhaba, it's thick and creamy with a layer of malai on top, costs like inr 60 and is perfect after a heavy meal. also try the gulab jamun at kanha's sweets, way better than ahuja's imo

if you're near hall bazaar in the evening, look for the old guy selling roasted corn with masala, it's like inr 20 and hits different in the winter chill. not a must try but a nice snack between stops

Amritsar trip in 3 months, whats a realistic budget?

arrow_drop_up 11 arrow_drop_down

15k is doable if you're not staying right at the temple. dharamshalas near the parikrama are like 500 a night and honestly clean enough. the real money sink is autos, they'll quote you 300 for a 60 rupee ride from the station so just use uber or ola. food is cheap, langar is free and a full kulfi falooda at giani di hatti runs maybe 80.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

If you're doing Wagah, factor in the shared cab or bus from the city, it's a solid half day gone and the return gets pricey if you stay for the retreat ceremony. 15k each should cover you fine for 3 days as long as you don't splurge on a fancy hotel, most people overspend on shopping at Hall Bazaar more than anything else.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

honestly 15k is fine but the thing nobody mentions is the golden temple area has free or super cheap rooms run by the sgpc, you just gotta book early or show up and wait. that saves you a big chunk right there. put that extra into the food, amritsari kulcha and lassi at the places near hall bazaar will run you maybe 200 for a full meal and its worth every rupee
