Salah El Din Citadel ticket scam in 2026?

fmd_goodSalah El Din Citadel · #citadel #scam #ticket
A man near the entrance offered to buy my ticket for me and said the window only takes Egyptian cards, then wanted extra cash on top. Is that a known trick at the Citadel or did I just get unlucky? I… A man near the entrance offered to buy my ticket for me and said the window only takes Egyptian cards, then wanted extra cash on top. Is that a known trick at the Citadel or did I just get unlucky? I ended up paying at the official window anyway, so I'm wondering what the angle was.

Window takes foreign cards fine, just ignore him.

Yeah, the queue is the giveaway.

Agreed, and the card reader at the ticket kiosk has taken my Visa every time. The angle is that he "helps" then demands baksheesh on top, and if you refuse he can get loud with the guards nearby. Just walk past him to the kiosk.

The loud part is real, I saw a guy start shouting at a tourist who refused and the guard just watched. Best move is to have the exact amount ready so there's no change to argue over. The Saladin Citadel kiosk is right past the main gate anyway.

Honestly the guards get a cut, thats why they never step in, so just dont engage at all.

Best way to get to Salah El Din Citadel in 2026?

fmd_goodSalah El Din Citadel · #metro #citadel #careem
visiting in march and staying downtown, is the metro plus a walk the easiest way to reach the citadel or should i just grab a careem? also is it worth going right at opening to beat the crowds visiting in march and staying downtown, is the metro plus a walk the easiest way to reach the citadel or should i just grab a careem? also is it worth going right at opening to beat the crowds

Metro to Mar Girgis then the 20-minute walk is fine in March mornings, but the Citadel's actual gate is a steep haul from the station.

the sayeda zeinab route is flatter on the approach if u dont mind the extra 10 min walk

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

bab zuela gate is the flatter entry tbh

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Agreed on that climb, Salah El Din's approach from the Salah Salem side is gentler if you're walking. Also worth knowing the police museum gate opens at 8 sharp, so arriving 7:45 keeps you ahead of the school groups.

Grab the Citadel shuttle from the parking lot, saves the climb.

careem is worth it tbh, the metro drops u at sayeda zeinab or mar girgis & the walk up to the citadel gate is hot & uphill, not fun in march afternoon. fare from downtown is maybe 60 to 90 egp depending on traffic. go at 8 when it opens, the alabaster mosque courtyard is near empty & u get the city view before the tour buses roll in around 10.
