πŸ“ Where to Start
Begin your culinary journey in Downtown Cairo, where the streets buzz with energy and the scent of grilled meat fills the air. Head to El Abd Bakery at 26th of July Street for their legendary fuul and taameya sandwiches, which cost around 10-15 EGP. This spot has been a local favorite for decades and opens as early as 6 AM.

🍜 Street Food Staples
For a true taste of Cairo, try koshari from Koshari Abou Tarek on 16 Maarouf Street. This iconic dish of rice, lentils, pasta, and crispy onions with tomato sauce costs about 25 EGP. Another must-try is hawawshi from El Hawawshi El Refaey on Sherif Street, a stuffed pita bread filled with spiced minced meat for 20 EGP.

πŸ“ Hidden Gems in Zamalek
Zamalek offers a quieter dining scene with excellent options like Sequoia at 27 Abou El Feda Street, which serves upscale Egyptian dishes with a Nile view. For a more casual meal, try Zooba at 26 Shagaret El Dor Street, known for its modern take on street food classics like koshari and taameya, with prices around 50-80 EGP.

πŸ“ Best Evening Spots
As the sun sets, head to the rooftop of The Nile Ritz-Carlton for a cocktail and mezze platter, with views of the Nile and Tahrir Square. For a lively atmosphere, visit Abou El Sid in Zamalek at 157 26th of July Street, where you can enjoy grilled meats and stuffed pigeon in a traditional setting. Expect to pay around 200-300 EGP per person.

πŸ’Έ Local Prices and Tips
Street food meals typically cost between 10 and 30 EGP, while sit-down restaurants range from 100 to 400 EGP per person. Always carry small bills, as many stalls do not accept credit cards. Tipping is customary, with 5-10 EGP being standard for street vendors.

🍜 Getting Around for Food
Use the Cairo Metro to reach central food hubs like Ataba or Sadat stations, which are close to Downtown and Zamalek. For areas like Mohandiseen or Heliopolis, ride-hailing apps like Uber or Careem are convenient and affordable, with trips averaging 30-60 EGP within central Cairo.

πŸ“ Sweet Endings
Finish your food tour with a dessert from El Abd Patisserie on 26th of July Street, famous for its basbousa and konafa. A slice costs around 15-20 EGP. For a more upscale treat, visit Mandarine Bistro in Zamalek at 21 Emad El Din Street, where the chocolate fondant is a crowd-pleaser.

this guide is honestly making me hungry just reading it. one thing i'd add is that if you're in zamalek and want something quick, grab a shawarma from El Shabrawy on Brazil Street, it's a tiny hole in the wall but the chicken shawarma with garlic sauce is only 30 EGP and way better than the tourist traps. also for the metro tip, the line 3 is newer and way less crowded than line 1 or 2, so if you're heading to heliopolis or the airport area use that instead, it's a lifesaver in summer when the stations get stuffy. the guide mentions prices but i'd say carry 50-100 EGP in small coins because some stalls stare at you if you hand them a 200 note for a 15 EGP sandwich

ngl this guide is solid, especially hitting koshari abou tarek and el abd. one thing i'd add is that the fuul and taameya at el abd are best right when they open around 6am, by 9am the queue snakes down the block and the bread gets less fresh. for a hidden gem in downtown that's not on here, try Felfela on Talaat Harb Street, they do a killer lentil soup and grilled chicken liver sandwiches for like 15 EGP, been around since the 50s. also for sweet endings, skip the patisserie chains and grab a plate of umm ali from Naguib Mahfouz Cafe in Khan El Khalili, it's 25 EGP and comes piping hot with nuts and raisins, perfect after a long day of eating

solid guide, really captures the downtown chaos well. one thing i'd add is that the koshari at abou tarek is great but if you want the real deal with less tourist crowd, walk five minutes to Koshari Al Tahrir on Talaat Harb Street, same price around 25 EGP and they let you choose your hot sauce level which makes a difference. also for the evening spots, abou el sid is fine but honestly overpriced for what it is, i'd rather grab a table at Taboula on 26th of July Street in Zamalek, their mixed grill platter is 180 EGP and the rooftop has a nice breeze. the metro tip is spot on, just avoid it during rush hour from 5 to 8 pm unless you enjoy being packed like a sardine in a can

Oh nice, I've been meaning to try that taameya spot but wasn't sure if it was still open that late, good to know.
