Getting a tax card in Cairo 2026, stuck on step two

I've got the paperwork together but I'm stuck on whether the registration has to be done in person at the tax office or if there's an online route now. Anyone been through this recently?

afaik u still gotta go to the mokateb el-darayeb in person for the tax card, not sure the online portal covers fresh registrations

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

yeah the portal only handles renewals & filings not first-time registration. the mokateb el-darayeb on sharia el-sheikh rihan is the one most people use, go early cos the queue gets long by 10

Same office, second floor for registration.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

second this, 8am is safer tbh

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Bring your lease or utility bill as proof of address, they won't process registration without it.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Lease needs to be registered at el-shahr el-aqari first, unregistered won't pass.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Worth adding that a utility bill only works if it's in your name, so ask the landlord to transfer it before you go.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

landlord transfer takes a couple weeks at the electricity office so start that before anything else or ur stuck waiting

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Ask about the mokateb el-darayeb intake hours, they close early.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

meter readings get checked too, so no backdating

How bad is the traffic there during morning rush, and is there anything about the road layout or exits I should know before I arrive?

morning rush on Al Nasr is rough, i'd budget 45 min for a stretch that takes 15 off peak. the road itself is fine but watch for the u-turn slots, they come up suddenly and people cut across lanes to hit them. also ngl the microbus drivers stop anywhere, so keep a gap. gas up before you head out, stations on that road are sparse.

Flyover exit near City Stars, easy to miss.

yeah that whole stretch around Abbas El Akkad is confusing if you don't know it. the turnoffs come up fast and signage is mostly Arabic, so learn your lane early. honestly google maps saved me more than once there.
