Buying online only saves maybe 10 min of queueing since the ticket window moves fast, but bring cash in EGP because teh card reader is often down.
small notes help too, they rarely have change
yeah and the 200 EGP note is the one nobody wants, so hoard 50s and 100s instead
cash queue is the slow one tbh
especially before 9, tour buses hit around 10
Last I checked the Citadel card reader worked fine but the Alabaster Mosque next door is cash only.

That desk shut years ago with the hotel
not sure that desk still exists, maybe try a bank branch in Islamic Cairo instead.

honestly sort ur cash before u go up, teh ATMs right by the entrance are hit or miss and can run dry on weekends. cards work at bigger hotels and restaurants downtown but around the Citadel itself expect cash only for snacks and tickets.
Agreed on the cash point, but I'd add the ticket window itself sometimes takes cards now, so don't panic if you're short. There's a Banque Misr branch on Salah Salem about ten minutes' walk down if you need a proper counter rather than a machine.
