Do people mostly meet through friends and family, or is it okay to just approach someone at a cafe on Al Nasr Rd? What are the norms around who makes the first move and how fast things usually go.

Met my wife's cousin's circle in Maadi, not Nasr Rd. The practical route here is khotba-style intros through family or a mutual friend vouching for u, that carries way more weight than a cold approach. Apps exist (Tinder, Bumble) but skew Zamalek/New Cairo and often stall at the family-meeting stage. Pace is slow by Western standards, months before anything serious is assumed.

The khotba path still needs wasta, and a cousin's vouching carries more weight than any app profile ever will.

Khotba stalls without a wasta, apps just speed up the stall.

Coffee shop approaches on Al Nasr Rd can come off as forward, so I'd lean on introductions from mutual friends at ahwa or shisha spots instead. Also, first moves vary a lot by class and family; a quick "how are you" is fine but don't expect it to move fast.

Fair point on the class split, though ahwa intros still need a wasta to vouch or it stalls at small talk.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Class and family do most of the work, but a wasta vouch is what actually gets u past small talk.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

honestly approachin strangers on Al Nasr Rd is not really a thing, most people meet thru friends or work, so get plugged into a social circle first.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Work is the big one, half the couples I know met at the office in Mohandessin, though family intros still dominate for marriage.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Getting into a circle through a friend or coworker is the only realistic route, since a cold approach there reads as rude.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

yeah agreed. tbh the circle thing starts at uni or the gym more than people admit. u gotta just be around long enough to get vouched for.

Metro Line 3 to Heliopolis, not Al Nasr Rd bus.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

microbuses stop running around midnight

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

fair, though the 949 microbus still cuts across to attaba

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Also runs past the airport road turnoff, gets packed.

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

The 949 drops you near Attaba but the walk to Sadat is longer than the map suggests, so plan for that.
