I went last year and just paid at the gate, no need to pre-book unless you want to skip the cash queue. Give it at least two to three hours if you're doing the mosques properly, the walk up to the viewpoint eats time too.

That matches what I found when I visited, though the ticket office occasionally runs a card trial that never seems to last. Bring cash and you're fine either way.

Foreign currency gets accepted too, but the rate they give is usually poor compared to the exchange shops on Sharia Talat Harb.
