dajin lake boat ride is nice but if you have time, rent one of the little electric boats instead. costs about 150 for an hour and you can go into the smaller side channels where the big tour boats dont fit. i found a little cove with a waterfall that was completely empty
for tea, skip the touristy yunwu garden and go to xiaoyang tea village in datian county instead. the farmers there will let you pick leaves with them in the morning and then roast them right after lunch. they charged me 40 kuai for the experience and i bought a kilo of their winter oolong for 80, which is half what youd pay in the city
honesly the Longqi Mountain hike is great but if you're not super fit start early in the morning. i went last summer and the afternoon sun made the last bit pretty brutal, plus the bamboo forest gets really humid by midday. bring at least 1.5L of water per person, theres no stalls on the trail
also a tip for the Ancient City of Taining, the small museum inside Shangshu Mansion has some cool Ming dynasty ceramics but the signs are only in Chinese. if you can read a bit or use a translator app its worth the extra 15 minutes. the stone carvings in the courtyard are easier to appreciate without explanation
The Taining Geopark tip is spot on. If you go, try to arrive right when it opens at 8 AM. The crowds don't show up until around 10, so you'll have the boat ride on Dajin Lake almost to yourself. I did that last fall and the mist over the red cliffs was something else.
For the night market, don't skip the bamboo rice near the main entrance. There's an older couple who have been selling it for years and they wrap it fresh in bamboo leaves right there. It's only about 5 RMB and pairs well with the fried tofu mentioned in the guide.

the marriott is nice but honestly the crowne plaza has better breakfast, they do this local snack called sha xiao chi that's hard to find in hotels, plus the pool is heated year round which matters in winter when it gets chilly
if you're staying in meilie district near the university, check out the night market on dongxin road around 8pm, it's smaller than the train station one but the grilled fish skewers are unreal, like 10 yuan for three and they're still sizzling when u get them
one thing i'd flag about the sanyuan district is that the bus to the city center can be packed during rush hour, like 8-9am and 5-6pm, so if you're staying there either walk or grab a taxi for like 12 yuan instead of waiting
the youth hostel near the station is solid but the private rooms have thin walls, i'd bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper, the dorm beds are actually quieter weirdly enough
nice breakdown of the districts, i've been bouncing around sanming for work trips the last few years and one thing i'd add is that liexi street gets really loud at night especially on weekends, like the karaoke bars blast music until 2am so if you're a light sleeper ask for a room facing away from the street or go a block deeper
for the family-friendly zone near the zoo, there's a tiny dumpling place called lao ma jiaozi on the pedestrian street that does handmade pork and chive ones for like 8 yuan a plate, the lady running it has been there forever and she'll remember your order if you go twice
the bus system is solid but the 19 line that goes from sanyuan to meilie takes a weird detour through some back roads and adds 15 minutes, just take the 1 or 5 instead if you're in a hurry
the airport shuttle's last run is at 9pm so if you land later you're looking at a 50 yuan taxi ride, worth knowing if your flight gets in after dark

for the digital nomad spot near the university, the wifi at jinjiang inn is fine but if u need really stable connection for video calls, try the starbucks on liexi street like u mentioned or the mcdonald's near the train station, they have fiber and it's never dropped on me
if you're on a budget and staying near the train station, don't sleep on the night market that pops up around 7pm on jiefang road, it's a 5 min walk from the youth hostel and you can get a full meal for like 15-20 yuan, the stinky tofu cart near the entrance is actually legit
one thing the guide doesn't mention is that the sanyuan district can be a bit dead after 9pm, so if you're looking for any evening activity stay closer to liexi street or dongxin road, buses stop running around 10pm too so plan accordingly
