Bus routes 1, 2, and 5 connect the city center to major food streets. A single ride costs 1 RMB. Taxis are also affordable, with most food destinations within a 10 RMB ride from downtown.
Good to see someone putting together a proper guide to Sanming. The bamboo rice mention is solid, but I'd add that the ones sold near the train station's east exit around 6 AM are actually better if you're catching an early bus. They use fresh bamboo from the hills outside town and the pork is from a butcher on Meilie Road who only sells morning cuts.
One thing the guide doesn't mention is the cold rice noodles at the stall behind the Sanming Hotel on Liexi Street. It's not marked, just a cart with a blue umbrella, but the owner's been there 15 years. She does a sesame oil and vinegar dressing that cuts through the summer heat, 6 RMB a bowl, and she's open from 11 AM until she runs out around 2 PM. Locals know to bring their own container because she goes through styrofoam bowls fast.
The night market tip is good but the grilled skewers on Dongxin 2nd are hit or miss depending on which stall you hit. The one with the yellow sign two stalls from the corner uses a heavier cumin that I prefer over the sweeter marinade the others use. Same price, just different style.
the yuan's tofu shop tip is real, i went at 7:30 and there were already 8 people ahead of me. worth the wait though, that chili sauce is no joke - i'm usually good with spice but i was sweating by the end
if you're at the liexi night market try the grilled fish from the stall with the red lanterns near the river, not the ones on the main path. the guy uses a different spice mix and it's way less oily. 15 rmb for a whole fish
also most people skip it but the morning market at the
oh man, that sha county tofu tip is spot on. i learned the hard way showing up at 1pm and they were already wiping down the counter. the line starts forming around 7:45 so bring a friend to hold your spot while you grab a soy milk from the shop next door.
the bamboo rice near liexi bridge is actually better after 7pm when the older lady runs the stall instead of her son. she packs more pork belly in there and doesn't rush the roasting. costs the same 8 rmb too.
one thing the guide missed - there's a little alley off dongxin 2nd road between the kfc and the pharmacy that has a guy selling grilled river snails for 5 rmb a cup. spicy and garlicky, perfect with a cold beer from the convenience store across the street. only there friday and saturday nights though
budget tips for sanming next month?
if u wanna stretch it the real trick is where u sleep, not what u eat. guesthouses around Liedong Jie run 80-120 a night vs 250+ at the chain hotels near the train station, and most throw in free breakfast. that frees up like 100 a day for the hot springs or a day trip. i usually budget 300 total and come back with change
Cash is less of an issue than you'd think, most places in the city take WeChat or Alipay now, even the little noodle stalls, so you don't need to carry much paper money. What catches people out is the transport out to the sights: Taining for the Danxia caves and the old town runs maybe 30 to 40 yuan by bus from the main station, and getting to Yuhua Cave or the Gele area can eat a chunk of your day and budget if you don't plan it. I'd set aside 250 a day to be comfortable and you'll likely come home with leftovers.
for food honestly u can eat cheap if u stick to local stuff, a bowl of shaxian xiaochi noodles is like 8-12 yuan, wontons similar. do that for lunch & dinner and ur food budget stays under 50 a day easy. transit is dirt cheap too, buses are 1-2 yuan flat, taxis rarely go over 15 within the city. i'd say 150-200 yuan a day covers food, buses & one paid sight, more if u wanna do the hot springs up in the mountains
