🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes
Nanning's cuisine is a vibrant mix of Zhuang and Southeast Asian influences. The iconic dish is Luosifen (river snail rice noodles), a pungent, spicy noodle soup that you can find at Shijie Luosifen at 12 Zhonghua Road for around 15-25 CNY. Another local favorite is Lao You Fen (old friend noodles), a stir-fried rice noodle dish with pickled bamboo shoots and pork, best sampled at Fulin Restaurant on 88 Minzu Avenue for about 20 CNY.

πŸͺ Best Street Food Stalls
For an authentic street food experience, head to Zhongshan Road Food Street, open from 6 PM to 2 AM, where stalls sell grilled oysters (10 CNY for 6), stinky tofu, and sugarcane juice. Another hotspot is the Jianzheng Road Night Market, where you can try spicy duck blood soup and grilled fish skewers for 5-15 CNY each.

🍽️ Top Sit-Down Restaurants
For a sit-down meal, try Guilin Renjia at 22 Dongge Road, known for its Guilin rice noodles and beer fish, with mains averaging 40-60 CNY. For upscale Cantonese dim sum, visit Nanning Hotel's Chinese Restaurant at 38 Minzu Avenue, where a full meal costs around 100-150 CNY per person.

🌢️ Spicy Food Hotspots
If you love heat, visit Xiang La Guan at 15 Jinhu Road, a Sichuan-style restaurant serving mapo tofu and boiled fish in chili oil, with dishes ranging from 30-80 CNY. For a local spicy twist, try the Zhuang-style sour and spicy fish at Zhuangxiang Restaurant on 66 Xingning Road, where a whole fish costs about 60 CNY.

🍧 Sweet Treats and Desserts
Cool down with a bowl of Liangfen (herbal jelly) from a street vendor at Chaoyang Square for 5 CNY. For a more elaborate dessert, visit Sweet Memory Dessert at 10 Gongyuan Road, which offers mango pomelo sago and coconut milk taro balls for around 15-25 CNY.

πŸš‡ Food Neighborhoods by Metro
Nanning's Metro Line 1 connects key food areas: get off at Chaoyang Square for Zhongshan Road Food Street, or at Nanning Railway Station for the Jianzheng Road Night Market. Line 2 stops at Jiangnan Wanda Plaza, where you'll find a food court with diverse options from 20-50 CNY.

πŸ’° Budget Tips and Prices
Street food meals typically cost 10-30 CNY, while a sit-down dinner at a mid-range restaurant runs 40-80 CNY per person. For the best value, visit during lunch hours when many restaurants offer set meals for 20-35 CNY. Avoid eating at tourist-heavy spots near the train station, where prices can be inflated.

πŸ•’ Best Times to Eat
Breakfast is served from 7-9 AM, with stalls selling rice rolls and soy milk. Lunch runs 11:30 AM-1:30 PM, and dinner starts around 5:30 PM. Night markets come alive after 7 PM and stay open until midnight or later, making them ideal for late-night snacks.

yeah this is a pretty good breakdown tbh. one thing i'd add is the morning rice rolls (fen chang) at the stalls near nanhu park, they're like 4 yuan each and the vendors make them fresh with egg and youtiao inside. way better than the sad ones u get at hotel breakfasts.

if you're into the sour and spicy fish at zhuangxiang, ask for the fermented bamboo shoot version instead of the regular one. it's a bit more pungent but that's where the real zhuang flavor is at. costs the same 60 yuan too.

also for the dim sum at nanning hotel, the weekday lunch special is a steal at 68 yuan per person for like 8 different dishes. weekends are packed with families so plan around that.

solid guide, pretty accurate on the luosifen front. i'd add that the branch at shijie luosifen gets packed at lunch so go around 2pm if u want a seat without waiting. also worth trying the dry version of lao you fen at fulin instead of the soup one, it's got a better char on the noodles.

for a sweet fix that's not on here, check out the coconut jelly stalls near the confucian temple on nanning people's road, they do a cold bowl with red beans and taro for like 8 yuan. way better than the generic stuff at chaoyang square imo.

this guide's got the basics down, but i'm surprised nobody's mentioned the breakfast scene around beidalu. there's a tiny shop called lao zhou fen dian near the intersection with minzu avenue, no sign in english, just a red awning. they do a killer dry mix of luosifen without the soup for 12 yuan, comes with crispy peanuts and pickled radish. way less intense on the smell if you're not used to the full broth, and you can add a braised egg for 2 yuan extra.

another thing, the beer fish at guilin renjia is solid but the portion's been shrinking lately. if you want a better version, take line 1 to nanhu station and walk to the old town section behind the lake. there's a family-run place called jiangnan yu wei that does the same dish with a whole fish for 45 yuan, and they throw in free pickled veggies. the owner's a retired chef from guilin so it's legit.

for the night market stalls on zhongshan, the grilled fish skewers at the far end near the temple entrance are the best imo. the guy uses a charcoal grill with banana leaves underneath, gives it a smoky flavor you don't get from the gas grills closer to the street. 15 yuan for two skewers, worth the walk.

honestly if you want good food and easy transit, Chaoyang is your best bet. it's the old city center so there's tons of street food around Minzu Avenue and the pedestrian streets, plus the metro runs right through it. you can get to Nanning East station in like 20 mins if you need to head out.

the area around the Yongjiang river is nice for evening walks too, and there's a bunch of small noodle shops that do killer luosifen for like 12 yuan a bowl. just avoid anything too close to the train station itself, it gets a bit sketchy at night.

Langxiang area near the Guangxi University stop on Line 1 is worth a look. It's a student neighborhood so the food is cheap and varied, lots of small stalls doing spicy skewers and rice noodles for under 10 yuan. The metro gets you downtown in about 15 minutes but you're also close to the Nanning Zoo if you want a low-key day out. It's not fancy, but for two weeks you'll eat well and save a bit.

chaoyang is solid but if you want something a bit more chill with still great food, check out the area around Qingxiu Mountain. it's a bit greener and quieter, lots of small restaurants tucked into the side streets near the east gate. the metro line 1 runs along that side too so you're still connected, just a few extra stops to the center.

there's a night market on Jinhu Road that's less touristy than the ones downtown, good grilled fish and those little stuffed pancakes. rent a bike and explore the lake paths around the mountain, it's a nice way to kill an afternoon
