fwiw the night cruise on the yongjiang river is way better than i expected, the bridges have these color-changing lights that reflect off the water and it feels almost cinematic. if you go on a friday or saturday they sometimes have a live singer on the boat doing covers of chinese pop songs. just book your ticket before 5 PM or they sell out fast, happened to me last spring and i had to wait two hours for the next one
the medicinal herb garden is a solid rec but barely anyone mentions the peacefulness of it. i went on a random tuesday afternoon and basically had the whole place to myself, just cicadas and the smell of mint and camphor. if you're into photography, the light through the bamboo grove around 3 PM is gorgeous. also, the guided tour is worth booking even if your chinese is decent, the guides know which plants treat specific ailments and will point out the ones that look like something else entirely
honestly the guangxi museum tip about booking ahead is spot on, i showed up without a reservation once and had to kill an hour waiting for the next slot. the bronze drum collection is worth it though, some of those drums are over 2,000 years old and the patterns are insane up close. if you're into history, the zhuang textile exhibit on the second floor is easy to miss but has some really intricate embroidery that tells stories from the villages
Where to stay in Nanning for 2 weeks?
honestly if you want good food and easy transit, Chaoyang is your best bet. it's the old city center so there's tons of street food around Minzu Avenue and the pedestrian streets, plus the metro runs right through it. you can get to Nanning East station in like 20 mins if you need to head out.
the area around the Yongjiang river is nice for evening walks too, and there's a bunch of small noodle shops that do killer luosifen for like 12 yuan a bowl. just avoid anything too close to the train station itself, it gets a bit sketchy at night.
Langxiang area near the Guangxi University stop on Line 1 is worth a look. It's a student neighborhood so the food is cheap and varied, lots of small stalls doing spicy skewers and rice noodles for under 10 yuan. The metro gets you downtown in about 15 minutes but you're also close to the Nanning Zoo if you want a low-key day out. It's not fancy, but for two weeks you'll eat well and save a bit.
chaoyang is solid but if you want something a bit more chill with still great food, check out the area around Qingxiu Mountain. it's a bit greener and quieter, lots of small restaurants tucked into the side streets near the east gate. the metro line 1 runs along that side too so you're still connected, just a few extra stops to the center.
there's a night market on Jinhu Road that's less touristy than the ones downtown, good grilled fish and those little stuffed pancakes. rent a bike and explore the lake paths around the mountain, it's a nice way to kill an afternoon
