honestly this is a solid guide, i live near the canal museum and can vouch for xiao wang's kitchen. the braised pork belly is good but what i really go there for is the fried river shrimp when they have it, only like 18 rmb and they fry it whole so u eat the shells

one thing the guide missed is the morning bean curd scene around the confucius temple. there's a little cart on dacheng road right outside the temple gates, open like 5:30 to 8 am, does this silky tofu with pickled mustard greens and a drizzle of chili oil. costs 4 rmb a bowl and it's the best breakfast in the city imo

also the lamb skewers at stall 27 are solid but if u want the real deal go to the corner of taibai middle and jianshe road where an old guy sets up his own little cart around 8 pm. his cumin lamb skewers are 3 rmb too but he uses a charcoal grill instead of gas, huge difference in flavor

fwiw the guide's spot on about the canal view restaurant for the view but the food's just ok. if u want actually good lu cuisine with a view, walk five minutes east to the little place above the tea house at 210 taibai east, no sign in english just a red lantern. they do this incredible sweet and sour carp that's like 70 rmb and the fish is always fresh cause they keep em in a tank out back

one thing nobody's mentioned yet is the sesame seed flatbread scene around the old east gate. there's a guy who's been making them in the same spot for like 30 years, opens at 4 pm and sells out by 6. they're 1.5 rmb each, crispy on the outside and chewy inside, best eaten straight off the griddle while walking around the temple at dusk

oh nice writeup, i'd add that the grilled cold noodles at stall 15 are good but the guy at stall 9 two rows over does a version with bean sprouts and a spicy peanut sauce that's way better, same price. also if you're near the canal museum in the afternoon, there's a lady who sells these sesame cakes stuffed with red bean paste from a basket on canal west lane, like 2 rmb each and they're still warm, perfect snack before dinner
