In the evening, head to the Heshan Riverside Promenade (鹤山滨江长廊) along the Xi River. It's a 10-minute taxi ride from the city center, costing about 15 yuan. Enjoy dinner at one of the seafood restaurants along the promenade, such as the Riverside Seafood Restaurant (江畔海鲜酒楼), where a meal for two is around 150 yuan. After dinner, take a leisurely walk and enjoy the night views. Buses stop running by 9:00 PM, so plan to take a taxi back to your hotel.

🏞️ Day 2 Morning: Gulao Water Town
Take a bus from Heshan Bus Station to Gulao Water Town (古劳水乡) at 8:00 AM. The journey takes about 40 minutes and costs 5 yuan. Once there, explore the waterways by boat, which costs 50 yuan per person for a 30-minute ride. The town is famous for its lotus ponds and traditional architecture. Wear comfortable shoes as you'll be walking on uneven paths.

🍽️ Day 2 Afternoon: Gulao Lunch
For lunch, try the local specialty fish dishes at a restaurant near the Gulao Water Town entrance, such as the Gulao Fish Farm (古劳渔庄). A meal costs about 60 yuan per person. After lunch, visit the Liang Zan Former Residence (梁赞故居), the birthplace of a famous martial artist, which is a 10-minute walk from the water town. The entrance fee is 20 yuan. Then, take a bus back to Heshan city center, departing at 3:00 PM.

🛍️ Day 2 Evening: Shopping & Dining
Back in Heshan, spend the late afternoon shopping at the Heshan Wanda Plaza (鹤山万达广场) on Shaping Road. It's open until 10:00 PM and has a variety of stores and a food court. For dinner, try the hot pot at Haidilao on the 4th floor, where a meal for two is around 200 yuan. To get there, take a taxi from the city center for about 12 yuan. Then, take a taxi back to the city center, arriving by 2:00 PM. Spend your remaining time visiting the Heshan Old Street (鹤山老街) on Zhongshan Road, where you can buy souvenirs like local pastries. The street is a 10-minute walk from Heshan Square.

🚌 Transport Tips
Heshan has a reliable bus system with fares of 2 yuan for most routes, but buses can be crowded during peak hours. Taxis are plentiful and start at 8 yuan for the first 2 kilometers, then 2.5 yuan per kilometer. For longer trips, consider using ride-hailing apps like Didi, which are often cheaper. If you're traveling between towns, the bus station on Heshan Avenue is the main hub.

been living here 4 yrs and honestly the guide gets the geography right which most posts dont. one thing id add tho, the 3 day plan is packed, u might wanna drop the art gallery on day 1, its small and skippable, use that time for a slow dinner instead

for day 2 u can actually get to gulao by didi for around 25 yuan from the center, faster than the bus & not much more if u split it. buses there are fine but the 8am one is full of commuters

also nobody ever mentions the tea houses near Renmin Park, there's one on the side street off Wenming Rd that does proper yum cha from 6am, dim sum carts & all. way better breakfast than whatever the wanda food court has. locals fill it by 7 so go early

dayun mountain sunset tip from the other reply is spot on btw, the morning haze thing is real

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

This is a nice writeup, covers way more than most Heshan posts do. One thing tho, the Gulao boat thing depends a lot on the season. In summer the lotus fields are insane, full bloom, but by late autumn its mostly dried stalks and the ride feels a bit empty. If you're going in winter maybe skip it and just wander the lanes on foot.

Also nobody mentions the morning market near Gulao bridge, tiny stalls selling water chestnut cakes (马蹄糕) for like 3 yuan, freshly steamed. Way better than any restaurant breakfast imo.

For Dayun Mountain, if you start at 7:30 like the guide says you'll hit the summit before the haze burns off, so the "panoramic views" might just be gray. Locals go late afternoon instead, catch the sunset over the Xi River. Just bring a light jacket, gets windy up top.

The itinerary is solid, but one thing you've got slightly off. Dayun Mountain is usually written as 大雁山 (Dayan Mountain, "wild goose mountain"), not 大雁 depending on how you read it. Locals just call it Yanshan. The hike is worth it though, and if you go on a weekday morning you'll have the summit mostly to yourself.

For the Gulao boat ride, skip the standard 30-minute loop and ask a boatman about the smaller canals near the lotus fields. It costs a bit more but it's far less crowded and you actually see how people live out there. Also, the 3 PM bus back fills up fast, so be at the stop by 2:45 or you're waiting for the next one.

One thing the guide missed: Heshan has decent late-night food near the old bus station on Heshan Avenue, mostly rice noodle shops that stay open past 11. Handy if you get back from Dayun Mountain hungry.

⛰️ Climb Mount Guifeng
Mount Guifeng, also known as Guifeng Mountain, is Heshan's most famous natural landmark and a must-visit for any traveler. The summit sits at 1,080 meters and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and Heshan city. The climb takes about two to three hours round trip, depending on your pace, and the trail is well-marked with stone steps. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes, as some sections are steep. There is a small entrance fee of around 30 yuan, and the park is open from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

🏛️ Explore Heshan Museum
For a deep dive into local history and culture, the Heshan Museum is an excellent stop. Located at 1 Renmin Road in the city center, it houses artifacts from the Neolithic period through the modern era, including ceramics, calligraphy, and exhibits on overseas Chinese culture. Admission is free, and it's open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The museum is easily accessible by bus lines 1, 5, and 8, which stop right in front.

🍜 Taste Local Flavors
Heshan is known for its distinctive Cantonese cuisine, particularly its freshwater fish and rice noodles. Head to the old town area around Shaping Street, where you'll find family-run eateries serving bowls of fish ball noodle soup for around 15 yuan. Don't miss the chance to try 'yum cha' at one of the local teahouses, especially on weekend mornings when the atmosphere is lively. For a sweet treat, look for stalls selling double-skin milk pudding, a silky dessert made with buffalo milk.

🚴 Cycle Along the Riverside
The Heshan Riverside Park stretches for several kilometers along the Xi River and is perfect for a leisurely bike ride. You can rent a shared bike using apps like Meituan or HelloBike for about 1.5 yuan per 30 minutes. The path is flat and car-free, making it safe for families. Along the way, you'll pass by ancient banyan trees, small pavilions, and local fishermen casting their nets. It's especially beautiful at sunset when the river reflects the sky.

🏯 Visit Ancient Temples
Heshan has several historic temples that offer a glimpse into the region's spiritual life. The most notable is the Daxing Temple, originally built during the Tang Dynasty and later rebuilt. It's located on the northern outskirts of the city and is free to enter, though donations are welcome. Another gem is the Guanyin Temple in the old town, dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, which holds lively festivals on the 19th day of the second lunar month. Both temples are active places of worship, so dress respectfully and keep noise to a minimum.

🛍️ Shop at Local Markets
For an authentic shopping experience, visit the Heshan Farmers Market on Zhongshan Road, open daily from early morning until around 6:00 PM. Here you can buy fresh produce, dried seafood, and local specialties like preserved sausages and salted fish. The nearby Shaping Commercial Street is great for clothing and household goods at bargain prices. Remember to bring cash, as many small vendors don't accept digital payments. Haggling is common, so don't be shy to negotiate.

🎭 Catch a Cultural Show
In the evenings, check out the Heshan Cultural Center on Wenming Road, which hosts performances ranging from Cantonese opera to modern dance. Tickets are usually affordable, around 50 to 100 yuan, and can be purchased at the door or through WeChat. The center also has a small gallery showcasing local artists. If you're lucky, you might catch a lion dance performance during festivals, a traditional art form that's still practiced in the area.

🌳 Relax in Parks
Heshan has several beautiful parks where you can unwind and people-watch. The largest is Heshan Park, located in the city center, featuring a lake, jogging paths, and a children's playground. It's open 24 hours and free to enter. Another favorite is the Lotus Pond Park on the east side, which blooms with pink and white lotus flowers in summer. Early mornings are the best time to visit, when locals practice tai chi and play traditional instruments.

the museum tip is worth it. i went on a rainy tuesday and basically had the overseas Chinese section to myself, lots of old letters and remittance slips from the 1930s which hit harder than the ceramics honestly. free and air conditioned, good rainy day backup.

one thing nobody mentioned: the double skin milk stalls near Shaping mostly close by like 8pm, and the good ones sell out earlier. if thats on your list go after lunch not after dinner. the buffalo milk version on Renmin lu near the museum is the one i keep going back to.

Good write-up, though I'd flag one thing about Mount Guifeng: the 1,080 meter figure is off. That's the height often quoted for the range, but the actual maintained trail tops out much lower, maybe 300 to 400 meters, and most people finish the round trip in well under two hours. I've done it on a lazy Sunday morning and still had time for yum cha afterward.

If you're into the temple angle, add Yanzishan Temple up in the hills northeast of town. It's quieter than Daxing and the walk up passes tea fields, which the guide doesn't mention at all.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

nice work putting this together, the temple section is the part most guides skip. one thing i'd add on Daxing: go early morning around 7, the monks do chanting then and you can just sit in the back courtyard, no one bothers you. completely different vibe from the afternoon tour crowd.

on the cultural center, the cantonese opera nights are usually wed and sat, but check their wechat because it changes with the season. tickets at the door are fine unless its a festival show, those sell out a few days ahead.
