๐Ÿœ Must-Try Local Dishes
Heshan is famous for its freshwater fish, especially the steamed Xijiang carp, which is often served with ginger and scallions at around 68 yuan. Another local favorite is the crispy roast goose, with half a bird costing about 45 yuan at most markets. Don't miss the claypot rice with preserved meats, a winter specialty that costs around 25 yuan per pot.

๐Ÿฎ Old Town Street Eats
The narrow lanes around Shaping Market on Zhongshan Road are packed with street stalls from 7 AM to 9 PM. Look for the rice noodle rolls (changfen) at 5 yuan per plate, and the fried taro cakes at 3 yuan each. For a quick snack, try the grilled squid skewers for 10 yuan at the corner of Renmin Road.

๐ŸŸ Seafood by the River
Along the Xijiang River promenade, several family-run restaurants serve fresh river shrimp and snails. A typical meal for two with three dishes costs around 120 yuan. The best spot is Hejiang Seafood Restaurant at 88 Yanjiang Road, open daily from 11 AM to 10 PM.

๐Ÿš Breakfast Spots Locals Love
Start your day with a bowl of congee and youtiao at the corner of Jiefang Road and Dongfeng Street, where a set costs 8 yuan. Another popular option is the steamed buns with pork filling at 2 yuan each from the stall near Heshan Bus Station, open from 6 AM to 10 AM. For something heartier, try the beef offal soup at 15 yuan at the morning market on Xinhua Road.

๐Ÿข Night Market Adventures
The Heshan Night Market on Gongyuan Road comes alive from 6 PM to midnight with over 50 stalls. Must-tries include stinky tofu at 8 yuan, grilled oysters at 10 yuan each, and stir-fried noodles at 12 yuan. Bring cash as some stalls don't accept mobile payments.

๐ŸฅŸ Dim Sum and Teahouses
For a traditional Cantonese morning tea, head to Heshan Teahouse at 45 Wenming Road, where dim sum dishes range from 6 to 18 yuan. The har gow and siu mai are particularly good, and the teahouse opens at 6:30 AM. Expect to pay around 50 yuan per person for a full meal.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Budget Dining Tips
A filling meal at a local noodle shop costs between 10 and 20 yuan, while mid-range restaurants charge 40 to 60 yuan per person. Look for set lunch menus at many restaurants around the city center, offering three dishes and rice for 35 yuan. Avoid tourist areas near the train station, where prices can be double.

๐ŸšŒ Getting to Food Areas
Most food streets are within walking distance of Heshan Bus Station, but you can also take bus routes 1, 5, or 8 to reach Shaping Market and the night market. Taxis start at 8 yuan and are easy to hail, though traffic peaks around 6 PM. For the riverfront seafood spots, take bus 12 to Yanjiang Road stop.

good list but the shui jiao spot on the corner of Zhongshan & Wenming is missing, tiny place no sign just a red awning, 12 yuan for a bowl and they only do breakfast til like 10:30. also heads up on the night market, cash thing is real but most stalls now take wechat if u scan the code taped to their cart, only the older vendors want paper money. for xijiang carp i'd skip the promenade spots and go to the family places tucked behind Shaping Market, same fish half the price cos ur not paying for the river view

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

decent guide, covers the staples well. one thing missing tho is the late night stuff past midnight, most of gongyuan road packs up but the dai pai dong cluster on the corner of jianshe road stays open til like 3am, mostly taxi drivers & hospital workers. their jook with century egg is 6 yuan & they do a fried eel claypot that nobody talks about. worth knowing if u land late or just get hungry after the night market closes

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

solid writeup, the carp price is spot on btw. one thing i'd add is the winter claypot rice is way better at the little stalls behind Xinhua Road market than anywhere central, they use cured duck leg instead of just lap cheong & it's like 22 yuan. also if ur doing dim sum at Heshan Teahouse go before 8am on weekends or u'll be waiting an hour for a table

been living here 4 yrs and honestly the guide gets the geography right which most posts dont. one thing id add tho, the 3 day plan is packed, u might wanna drop the art gallery on day 1, its small and skippable, use that time for a slow dinner instead

for day 2 u can actually get to gulao by didi for around 25 yuan from the center, faster than the bus & not much more if u split it. buses there are fine but the 8am one is full of commuters

also nobody ever mentions the tea houses near Renmin Park, there's one on the side street off Wenming Rd that does proper yum cha from 6am, dim sum carts & all. way better breakfast than whatever the wanda food court has. locals fill it by 7 so go early

dayun mountain sunset tip from the other reply is spot on btw, the morning haze thing is real

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

This is a nice writeup, covers way more than most Heshan posts do. One thing tho, the Gulao boat thing depends a lot on the season. In summer the lotus fields are insane, full bloom, but by late autumn its mostly dried stalks and the ride feels a bit empty. If you're going in winter maybe skip it and just wander the lanes on foot.

Also nobody mentions the morning market near Gulao bridge, tiny stalls selling water chestnut cakes (้ฉฌ่น„็ณ•) for like 3 yuan, freshly steamed. Way better than any restaurant breakfast imo.

For Dayun Mountain, if you start at 7:30 like the guide says you'll hit the summit before the haze burns off, so the "panoramic views" might just be gray. Locals go late afternoon instead, catch the sunset over the Xi River. Just bring a light jacket, gets windy up top.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

The itinerary is solid, but one thing you've got slightly off. Dayun Mountain is usually written as ๅคง้›ๅฑฑ (Dayan Mountain, "wild goose mountain"), not ๅคง้› depending on how you read it. Locals just call it Yanshan. The hike is worth it though, and if you go on a weekday morning you'll have the summit mostly to yourself.

For the Gulao boat ride, skip the standard 30-minute loop and ask a boatman about the smaller canals near the lotus fields. It costs a bit more but it's far less crowded and you actually see how people live out there. Also, the 3 PM bus back fills up fast, so be at the stop by 2:45 or you're waiting for the next one.

One thing the guide missed: Heshan has decent late-night food near the old bus station on Heshan Avenue, mostly rice noodle shops that stay open past 11. Handy if you get back from Dayun Mountain hungry.
