honestly the guide's spot on about the old town vibe in Daxu, but here's a thing most people miss - there's a tiny bridge just past the main market area that crosses a canal where locals wash their veggies in the morning. I stumbled on it around 7am and watched a grandma pull fresh water spinach straight from the water, it was wild to see city life like that
also for the noodle spot on Zhongshan Middle Road, the lady who runs it only uses her own pickled bamboo shoots and it's way more tangy than the usual stuff. she's been there for like 15 years and barely speaks mandarin, just points at bowls. totally worth the 6 yuan
the guide nails it with lao you ji being the real deal but here's a pro move - go there around 10am right before they run out of the braised pork topping. the line gets long fast but the old lady who takes orders has this system where she just remembers ur face and bowl preference, no tickets or anything
one thing the guide doesn't mention is the morning market that sets up along the riverbank near the liberation bridge around 6am. it's mostly local farmers selling weird stuff like fermented tofu blocks and fresh lotus roots. i grabbed a bag of steamed chestnuts from a lady there for 3 yuan and ate them while watching the sunrise hit the pagodas. way more chill than any restaurant breakfast
also for the bike rental thing, there's a shop on zhongshan north road that rents electric scooters for 50 yuan a day instead of bikes. the owner doesn't advertise it but if u ask he'll show u a fleet of them. way easier for covering the countryside roads between guilin and yangshuo without showing up drenched in sweat
ngl this guide is really well put together, i've been living here for a few years and the banyan lake tip is spot on. there's a specific alley off the south side of the lake where an old couple runs a tiny stall selling guilin rice noodle soup with a broth that's been simmering since like 5am, it's thick and almost creamy from the pork bones. they're only there from 7 to 9am and if you show up after 8:30 the good cuts of meat are gone
also for the pottery studio on qixing road, li wei does these weekend workshops where he lets u fire your own piece in his wood kiln, not just the electric wheel. costs 80 yuan but you get a mug or bowl that's actually usable after a week, he'll ship it to your hotel for free. just be careful with the clay, that stuff stains clothes real bad

Nice guide, covers the basics well. One thing I'd add is that the public buses to Yangshuo are fine, but the shared minivan from the bus station is actually more comfortable and only 5 CNY more. I made that mistake once on a hot day and regretted it.
The free viewpoint tip is good, but I'd specifically recommend going to the top of the Banyan Lake pagoda complex around sunset. It's free to enter the grounds and you get a killer view of the Sun and Moon Pagodas lighting up without paying the 35 CNY for Diecai Hill. The light show they mention starts around 7:30 PM and runs about 20 minutes, best watched from the small bridge near the Sheraton Hotel.
the guide's right about the free view of elephant trunk hill from the opposite bank, but most people miss the spot. go to the small pavilion on the south side of the river, just past the twin pagodas. there's a little path down to the water where locals fish and you can see the whole rock formation without the crowds or the ticket price.
also, for the rice noodle tip, the best time to hit those street stalls is before 9am. my favorite spot on wenhua road runs out of the good broth by 10 and switches to a weaker version for the lunch crowd. the 5 cny bowl at 8am is a totally different experience from the same price at noon
Solid breakdown, covers the essentials without the fluff. One thing that's saved me a ton is the free water refill stations at most of the smaller parks like Ronghu Lake. You'll see locals filling up at these little taps near the restrooms, saves buying plastic bottles at 3-4 CNY each from the venders.
Also, if you're doing the Yangshuo bus thing, the 25 CNY minibus drops you at the main square but the local bus 1 from there goes right to West Street for 1 CNY. The taxi drivers at the square will try to charge you 15-20 for that same 5 minute ride. Learnt that the hard way my first trip.
