fwiw the guide's price breakdown is pretty accurate but the Gaoping Grand Hotel is way overpriced for what it is. i stayed there once for a work thing and the rooms were fine but nothing special, the breakfast buffet was cold and the pool was closed for "maintenance" both days. for 600 yuan you're better off at the Holiday Inn Express or even the Lakeside Resort if you want something nicer
the walking paths around South Lake are great in the morning btw, there's a little tea house on the north shore that opens at 6am and does fresh brewed jasmine for 8 yuan. perfect spot to watch the old guys doing tai chi before the crowds show up
one thing about getting around that nobody's said yet, the city bike rental system is pretty good if you have the app. there's docks all over the center and the first 30 minutes are free. way easier than dealing with buses and you can cover most of the main sights in 15-20 minutes pedaling
theres a solid little guesthouse on the western edge of the old town called the Mingfeng Inn that the guide doesnt mention. its like 100 a night and the rooftop has a great view of the city wall at sunset, the owner lets you borrow bikes for free too. beats the courtyard places if u want a bit more privacy
