also the guide mentions the green tea but there's a small tea house on east street near the old temple that does a cold brew version in summer, way smoother than the hot stuff and they let you sit in their courtyard for free as long as you buy a cup

one thing they missed is the grilled fish skewers near the east gate market around 9 PM, this old guy sets up with a charcoal grill and the fish is caught fresh that morning from the river. costs like 8 yuan per skewer and he puts this tangy tamarind sauce on it that i haven't found anywhere else
also for drinks the sugarcane juice is solid but the fresh coconut water from the lady on renmin road near the bank is way better, she cracks it open right in front of you and it's only 4 yuan

fwiw the guide's price breakdown is pretty accurate but the Gaoping Grand Hotel is way overpriced for what it is. i stayed there once for a work thing and the rooms were fine but nothing special, the breakfast buffet was cold and the pool was closed for "maintenance" both days. for 600 yuan you're better off at the Holiday Inn Express or even the Lakeside Resort if you want something nicer
the walking paths around South Lake are great in the morning btw, there's a little tea house on the north shore that opens at 6am and does fresh brewed jasmine for 8 yuan. perfect spot to watch the old guys doing tai chi before the crowds show up
one thing about getting around that nobody's said yet, the city bike rental system is pretty good if you have the app. there's docks all over the center and the first 30 minutes are free. way easier than dealing with buses and you can cover most of the main sights in 15-20 minutes pedaling
theres a solid little guesthouse on the western edge of the old town called the Mingfeng Inn that the guide doesnt mention. its like 100 a night and the rooftop has a great view of the city wall at sunset, the owner lets you borrow bikes for free too. beats the courtyard places if u want a bit more privacy
for anyone with a rental car the parking situation near Gaoping Square is a nightmare on weekends. i learned that the hard way and ended up in a lot 3 blocks away for 10 yuan an hour. the South Lake district has free street parking on the side roads if u find a spot

I've stayed in both the Business District and the city center on separate trips, and the Holiday Inn Express near the Exhibition Center is solid if you need to get work done. The lobby has a decent coffee machine and the desks in the rooms are actually big enough for a laptop, which is rare in that price range.
One thing the guide doesn't mention is that the night market on Renmin Road, about a ten minute walk south of Gaoping Square, has some of the best street food in the city. The grilled skewers at stall 17 are especially good, and everything is under 20 yuan. It gets busy around 8pm, so go early if you want a seat.
For anyone coming from the airport, the shuttle bus is fine, but it drops you at the square and you still need to get to your hotel from there. I usually just take a Didi from the airport, it's around 40 yuan and saves the hassle.
