🍷 Wine Tasting Essentials
Maipu is the heart of Mendoza's wine region, and you can't miss Bodega Trapiche (Nueva Mayorga s/n, Coquimbito), open daily 9am to 6pm, with tours from 300 ARS. For a more intimate experience, book a tasting at Bodega Familia Zuccardi (Ruta Provincial 33, MaipĂş), where the olive oil tour and lunch pairings are worth the splurge. Most wineries require reservations, especially on weekends, so call ahead or book online.

đźš´ Bike the Wine Route
Renting a bike is the classic way to hop between wineries. Mr. Hugo's Bike Rental (Calle Urquiza 160, Coquimbito) offers full-day rentals for about 800 ARS, including a map and free wine at the end. The route along Calle Urquiza is flat and shaded, but watch for traffic on weekends. Start early to avoid the afternoon heat and crowds.

🍽️ Lunch at Wineries
Many wineries offer multi-course lunches with wine pairings. Bodega Norton (Ruta Provincial 15, Perdriel) serves a five-course lunch for around 2500 ARS, featuring local dishes like empanadas and slow-cooked lamb. Reservations are essential, and lunch typically starts at 12:30pm. For a lighter option, Bodega La Rural (San MartĂn 3073, Coquimbito) has a tapas menu and wine flights.

🏛️ Historical Sights
The National Wine Museum (Ozamis 914, Coquimbito) is housed in a former winery and traces the history of winemaking in Mendoza. Admission is 200 ARS, and it's open Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 5pm. Nearby, the Basilica of San Vicente Ferrer (Calle San Vicente 500) is a peaceful stop with beautiful architecture.

🛍️ Local Markets
Mercado Central de MaipĂş (Calle Sarmiento 150) is a great spot to buy fresh produce, cheeses, and olives. It's open daily from 8am to 8pm, but mornings are best for the widest selection. Don't miss the opportunity to sample local olive oils and jams from small producers.

🚌 Getting Around
MaipĂş is about 30 minutes from Mendoza city by car or bus. The 10 bus (Empresa MaipĂş) runs from Mendoza's central bus station to MaipĂş every 20 minutes for 50 ARS. Taxis and remises are available but can be pricey; Uber works in the area but coverage is spotty. For winery hopping, consider hiring a driver for the day (around 3000 ARS).

🌄 Outdoor Activities
For a break from wine, head to Parque Metropolitano (Calle San MartĂn, MaipĂş) for hiking and biking trails. The park is free and open from sunrise to sunset. Another option is horseback riding at Estancia El Rosario (Ruta 60, MaipĂş), which offers guided rides through vineyards and olive groves for about 1500 ARS per person.

🍷 Evening Wine Bars
After a day of touring, unwind at Vines of Mendoza (Calle Belgrano 1194, MaipĂş), a cozy wine bar with over 100 wines by the glass. It's open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. For a more local scene, Bar de Vinos (Calle Pescara 120) has live music on Thursdays and a happy hour from 6pm to 8pm with 2-for-1 wines.

solid list but one thing i'd add for anyone doing the bike route: mr hugo's gets slammed by like 10am on saturdays so if u show up at 9 u basically have calle urquiza to urself for the first hour. also the 800 ARS price is old, last time i went it was closer to 3000 with the inflation thing, so bring cash & don't count on card machines at the smaller bodegas. one winery that never makes these lists is bodega la rural's carmenere, cheap tasting & way less crowded than trapiche on a sunday

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

the museum tip is the one i always tell people too, most folks blow right past it on the way to trapiche. one thing missing though is timing on the wine route itself, harvest is feb to april & that's when the bodegas are actually working, u can sometimes watch the crush if u ask nicely, whereas july u get empty tanks & a quieter tour. also if ur here in march the Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia stuff spills over into maipu, worth checking dates before u book anything

good writeup, the museum bit especially since most people skip it. one thing i'd flag on the food side: those winery lunch prices have moved a lot, Norton's five course is closer to 25000 ARS now not 2500, so budget accordingly or you'll get a surprise at the till. if you want the same experience cheaper, Bodega Tempus Alba on Calle Moreno does a solid picada with tastings for way less and it's a short ride from the Coquimbito strip, no reservation usually needed on weekdays. also the 10 bus is fine but the last one back to Mendoza leaves earlier than you'd think, around 9pm, so don't get stranded after an evening at Vines.

Maipu on a Budget: Tips 2026

🍽️ Affordable Eats
For a filling lunch, head to the Mercado Central de MaipĂş at Avenida Pajaritos 2100, where set menus (almuerzo corrido) cost between $4,000 and $6,000 CLP and include soup, main, and dessert. Street vendors around Plaza de MaipĂş sell empanadas for $1,500 to $2,500 CLP, perfect for a quick snack. In the evening, try the food stalls along Avenida 5 de Abril, where a completo (Chilean hot dog) goes for around $2,500 CLP. Many local bakeries offer fresh bread and pastries for under $1,000 CLP, ideal for a cheap breakfast.

🚌 Getting Around
MaipĂş is well connected by the Santiago Metro Line 5, with stations like Plaza de MaipĂş and Santiago Bueras. A single metro ride costs around $800 CLP during off-peak hours, and you can use the same Bip! card for buses. Buses (Micro) within MaipĂş have a flat fare of about $700 CLP, but transfers within 90 minutes are free if you use the same card. Taxis and ride-sharing apps like Uber are available but can be pricier; a short trip within MaipĂş might cost $3,000 to $5,000 CLP.

🏨 Budget Accommodation
Hostels in MaipĂş start at around $15,000 CLP per night for a dorm bed, with places like Hostal MaipĂş located near the metro station. For a private room in a guesthouse, expect to pay $25,000 to $35,000 CLP per night. If you're staying longer, consider renting a room in a local family's home (arriendo de pieza) for about $150,000 CLP per month. Booking in advance during peak season (January and February) is wise, as prices can rise by 20 to 30 percent.

🎟️ Free Activities
Plaza de MaipĂş is a great spot for people-watching and often hosts free cultural events on weekends. The Municipal Library of MaipĂş (Avenida Pajaritos 2100) offers free Wi-Fi and reading areas. For outdoor lovers, Cerro Chena in nearby San Bernardo offers free hiking trails with panoramic views of the Maipo Valley. Additionally, the Feria Libre de MaipĂş (open-air market) on Wednesdays and Saturdays is free to browse and offers a lively local atmosphere.

đź’° Local Saving Tips
Locals shop at ferias libres for fresh produce, where prices are often 30 to 50 percent lower than supermarkets. For example, a kilo of tomatoes might cost $800 CLP at the feria versus $1,500 CLP at Lider. Buying a Bip! card and reloading it with $5,000 or more gives you a small discount on each trip. Many museums and cultural centers offer free admission on Sundays, so plan your visits accordingly. Also, look for "happy hour" promotions at local bars, typically from 6 to 8 PM, with discounts on drinks and appetizers.

đź›’ Cheap Shopping
The Persa EstaciĂłn (Avenida Pajaritos 2100) is a flea market open on weekends where you can find second-hand clothing, electronics, and household items for a fraction of retail prices. For groceries, Supermercado Mayorista 10 (Avenida 5 de Abril 4500) offers bulk discounts and often has lower prices than chain supermarkets. Local Chinese-run stores (paqueterĂas) sell everything from toiletries to snacks at very competitive prices. Don't forget to haggle at the feria; it's expected and can save you an extra 10 to 20 percent.

🚶 Walking Tours
While MaipĂş doesn't have formal free walking tours, you can explore the historic center on foot, starting from Plaza de MaipĂş and heading to the Temple of MaipĂş (Templo Votivo de MaipĂş), a national monument with free entry. The walk takes about 30 minutes and passes by local shops and cafes. For a guided experience, some local operators offer pay-what-you-wish tours; check with the tourist information booth at the plaza. Alternatively, download a self-guided audio tour app for a few dollars.

🌳 Parks and Relaxation
Parque de las Esculturas in nearby Providencia is a bit far, but MaipĂş has its own green spaces like Parque El Bosque (Avenida El Bosque 1200), which is free to enter and perfect for a picnic. The park has benches, shade trees, and a small playground for kids. Another option is the riverside walk along the Mapocho River, accessible from Avenida Pajaritos, where you can jog or cycle for free. Bring your own snacks and water to avoid spending on vendors.

Good breakdown, the budget numbers are pretty accurate from what I've seen. One thing the guide misses is the pharmacy angle. The farmacias de turno along Avenida Pajaritos stay open late and they sell basic meds way cheaper than the chains, plus most of them carry sunscreen and toiletries at prices that beat the paqueterĂas. Handy if you're staying a while and don't want to haul stuff from home.

Also on the metro point, be careful with the Metro de Santiago evening rush around 6 to 8pm at Plaza de MaipĂş station

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

solid writeup, the mercado central tip is spot on. one thing i'd add on the food side is the sodas and picadas around Plaza de MaipĂş get way cheaper after 4pm, like a full once (tea time) with pan amasado and huevos for under $3,000. the bakery near the corner of Avenida Pajaritos and 5 de Abril does fresh marraquetas that come out around 6pm and they're like $300 each, still warm.

for the accommodation bit, hostels near Plaza de MaipĂş are fine but if you're staying more than a week look at the residenciales along Avenida 5 de Abril, they're less touristy and often $12,000 to $18,000 for a single with shared bathroom. cash only usually, so bring efectivo.

the feria tip about haggling is real but tbh the wednesday feria at Plaza de MaipĂş is smaller than the saturday one near Pajaritos, so if you want variety go saturday morning early, like before 10am.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

One thing the guide gets right but undersells is the feria timing. The Feria Libre on Wednesdays is much calmer than Saturdays, so if you want to actually talk to vendors and not just get elbowed through the aisles, go midweek. I've also found that the last hour before closing is when prices drop the most, especially on fruit that won't keep, and a lot of stalls will just fill a bag for $1,000 CLP rather than weigh it out.

On the Bip! card point, the 90 minute transfer window is the real money saver here. MaipĂş is far enough out that you'll almost always need a bus plus the metro to get anywhere central, and if you're not careful with your tapping you end up paying twice. Also worth knowing that the fare drops during off-peak, so if you're flexible, leaving after 9am or between 3 and 6pm saves a bit on each trip.

For the free activities section, the Templo Votivo is genuinely worth the walk and it's more impressive than the guide lets on. Go on a Sunday morning when there's usually something happening in the plaza.
