**🙏 Greeting Customs** When meeting locals in Shangrao, a simple nod or handshake is appropriate, but avoid overly firm grips. Address people by their surname plus a title like 'xiansheng' (Mr.) or 'nvshi' (Ms.). If you're invited to someone's home, bring a small gift like fruit or tea, and present it with both hands. **🏯 Temple and Shrine Rules** At temples such as the Guifeng Temple or the Shangrao Confucian Temple, dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Remove your shoes before entering prayer halls, and never point your feet at statues or monks. Photography is often prohibited inside halls, so look for signs or ask before snapping. **🥢 Dining Etiquette** Never stick chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice, as it resembles incense at a funeral. Instead, rest them on the chopstick holder or the edge of your plate. When dining with locals, wait for the host to start eating, and try a bit of every dish. Tipping is not customary in Shangrao, even in upscale restaurants like the ones along Xinjiang Road. **👘 Dress Code** Casual, modest clothing is fine for most of Shangrao, but avoid wearing beachwear or revealing outfits in public spaces. For business meetings or formal dinners, wear smart casual or business attire, such as a collared shirt and slacks. In summer, lightweight fabrics are best, but always carry a light jacket for air-conditioned venues. **🤫 Public Behavior** Keep your voice low in public places like buses, trains, and museums; loud conversations are considered rude. When queuing for tickets at attractions like the Sanqing Mountain scenic area, wait your turn patiently and avoid pushing. Also, avoid public displays of affection, which are uncommon in this region. **📷 Photography Manners** Ask permission before photographing locals, especially in rural areas or at markets like the Shangrao Flower Market. In museums and galleries, flash photography is usually banned, so turn it off. For scenic spots like Wuyuan's ancient villages, drone use may require a permit, so check local regulations first. **🚶 Queueing and Transport** When boarding buses or the high-speed rail at Shangrao Station, form a single line and let passengers exit first. On escalators, stand on the right and walk on the left, though this is less common in smaller towns. For taxis, use the official ranks or ride-hailing apps like Didi, and avoid hailing from the middle of the street. **🎁 Gift Giving** If invited to a local home, bring a small gift such as high-quality tea, fruit, or pastries, but avoid clocks, umbrellas, or white flowers, as these symbolize parting or death. Present the gift with both hands and modestly downplay it, saying something like 'It's just a small token.' The host may initially refuse, so insist politely.
