**🏞️ Quiet Mountain Retreats** Escape the crowds at Jiulong Mountain, a lesser-known hiking spot with sweeping views of the surrounding valleys. The trail starts near the village of Shangban, about 30 minutes by taxi from the city center. Entry is free, and the best time to visit is early morning to catch the sunrise. **🍜 Local Eateries Off the Map** Head to Laoma Street for authentic Chengde lamb skewers at a tiny stall called Aunty Wang's Barbecue, open from 5 PM to midnight. For a hearty breakfast, try the sesame pancakes at Xiaoli's Breakfast Shop on Wenyuan Road, where a full meal costs under 10 yuan. These spots are frequented by locals but rarely appear in guidebooks. **🏘️ Hidden Neighborhoods** Wander through the narrow alleys of the Old North Gate area, where traditional courtyard homes have been converted into small art studios and tea houses. The neighborhood is a 10-minute walk from Puning Temple and offers a glimpse of daily life away from the main tourist routes. Look for the blue sign marking the entrance to Huayuan Lane. **🌅 Quiet Viewpoints** For a peaceful sunset, climb the small hill behind the Chengde Museum, which offers a panoramic view of the city skyline and the distant mountains. The path is unmarked but starts near the museum's back gate, and the climb takes about 15 minutes. Bring a flashlight if you stay until dark. **🚌 Getting Around Like a Local** Use the city's public buses for just 1 yuan per ride to reach hidden spots like the Shuangta Mountain area. Bus routes 6 and 15 connect the main train station to the outskirts, where you can find quiet temples and local markets. Taxis are affordable for shorter trips, with most rides under 15 yuan. **🌙 Evening Hangouts** Join locals at the night market on Bishui Street, where you can sample grilled tofu and candied hawthorn sticks from family-run stalls. The market runs from 6 PM to 10 PM and is a great place to people-watch. For a quieter evening, visit the rooftop bar at the Chengde International Hotel for a view of the illuminated temples. **🛍️ Unique Souvenir Finds** Skip the tourist shops and browse the antique stalls at the weekend flea market near the Wulie River, open Saturdays and Sundays from 8 AM to 2 PM. You can find vintage porcelain, old coins, and hand-painted fans at bargain prices. Haggle politely, as prices are often marked up for visitors.
