ngl the Puning Temple area is worth going out of your way for even if you've seen other temples in Chengde. The big Guanyin statue inside is legitimately impressive, they don't let you take photos of it but that's fine because you'd never capture how massive it is anyway. I'd also swing by the little market street just outside the entrance, they sell these fried sesame cakes that are like 5 RMB and way better than anything you'll find in the city.

for the Imperial Summer Resort, the guide's right that it's a full day thing but I'd say skip the main palace area if you're short on time. The gardens and lake path are where it's at, the palace halls are mostly empty rooms with some furniture and the queue to get in is always long. Pack a picnic and find a bench near the willow trees on the south side, it's quiet and you can watch the ducks paddle around.

I've done the Jinshanling trip a few times and there's one thing this guide doesn't mention. If you go on a weekday, especially outside peak season, you can sometimes find yourself completely alone on the unrestored sections past the main watchtowers. That's the real magic of it. Just bring good shoes because those loose stones are no joke.

The donkey burgers on West Street are a solid recommendation. I'd add that the best ones come from the small hole-in-the-wall places near the Wulie River bridge, not the sit-down restaurants. They're about 8 RMB each and they grill the buns right there on the cart.

For the Imperial Summer Resort, skip the boat ride and walk the eastern path along the lake instead. You'll see the same views without the queue and you can stop at the Wenjin Ge library building which most tourists miss. It's a nice spot to sit and rest.

One place that often gets overlooked is the Saihanba National Forest Park, about three hours north of Chengde by car. It's a massive man-made forest with pine trees and meadows that feel a world away from the temple crowds, and the entrance is 130 RMB. The drive up through the mountains is scenic on its own, so it works well if you have a private driver for the day. Just pack a jacket because it stays cool even in summer, and the restaurant options up there are limited to basic noodle stalls near the parking lots.

Skip the hotels entirely and look at the area around Chengde Railway Station or the university district near Chengde Medical College. rooms there run 120-180 yuan even in spring and you're a 15 min bus ride from the resort. book 2-3 weeks out on Meituan not the international sites, prices are way lower and you can pay with a foreign card through the app now.

for food budget, don't just count meals. the night market near Bishu Shanzhuang's east gate does grilled lamb skewers and wanwan noodles for like 8-15 yuan a plate, and thats where locals actually eat. i'd set 80-100 a day for food if you graze like that instead of sit-down restaurants.

one thing thats easy to miss, most temples close ticket sales around 4:30 even though they say 5, so plan your outer temple loop for mornings.

entrance fees add up faster than people expect cuz the resort & each temple ticket separately, so budget maybe 400-500 yuan total just for sights if u hit the big ones. one thing nobody mentioned: the resort is huge, like 8km of roads inside, so renting a bike or paying for the shuttle inside is worth it or u will be wrecked by noon. also bring ur passport everywhere, they check it at ticket gates for foreigners & some places wont sell u a ticket without it

the mountain resort ticket is the big one but dont sleep on the surrounding temples outside the walls, some like Shuxiang Temple are way cheaper or even free to wander the grounds. if ur going in 4 months thats probably late spring so check the peak season start date, it usually kicks in around april 1 and prices jump. for getting around, the sightseeing buses between the resort and the outer temples are like 10-20 yuan and save u a ton of walking, way better than didi for that specific route tbh
