Good itinerary, you've got the pacing right. The lake district in the mountain resort is worth a proper wander, most people rush through to the temples but the mist over the water in the early morning is what I remember most. If you have time on day 1, rent a little paddle boat for 40 yuan an hour, it's a nice way to see the pavilions from the water and you can float past the island with the fake Suzhou buildings.
For day 3, if you end up at Anyuan Temple, check out the black glazed tile roof. It's unusual for Chinese temples, they used a special kiln technique here that you won't see anywhere else in Chengde. The place is usually empty so you can take your time. Also, the bus 6 you mentioned runs every 15 minutes but it gets packed during school drop-off around 7:30, so aim for 9am instead.
Really good plan, covers everything without being too exhausting. one thing I'd mention is if you're there in summer the mountain resort gets crazy hot by 10am so getting there at 8 is smart, but also bring a fan or water. for day 3 afternoon, instead of the pedestrian street for souvenirs, the little lane behind the museum has a few old shops selling dried hawthorn and local honey, way cheaper and more authentic than the tourist stuff. the silk fans are nice but they're all mass produced anyway

For day 1 evening, instead of Xiangheyuan, I'd recommend walking a bit further to Laotie Guo Tie on Xinhua Road, it's a small place that does a really good braised pork rib hotpot, around 80 yuan per person and more of a local vibe. The Wulie River walkway is nice but if you go a bit south past the bridge, there's a quieter stretch where locals fish at dusk, good for photos without the crowds. For day 3, the museum is worth it but check their hours online first, they sometimes close for lunch between 11:30 and 1:30 which caught me off guard.

the bus tip is solid but fair warning they can get packed during rush hour, like 5-6pm. if you're near the Mountain Resort around then just walk instead, it's not that big of an area. also for the street food stalls near the East Gate, the one with the red awning and the old guy making noodles is the best one, been there for years. the others are hit or miss. for the Chengde Museum free day, it's actually the first Tuesday but they also do it on national holidays sometimes, just double check their wechat account before going.
honestly this is a solid guide, one thing i'd add is the free walking tours that sometimes pop up near the main gate of the Mountain Resort. i stumbled on one last september run by a local history buff, it was pay-what-you-want and way better than the official audio guides. also, if you're up for a hike, the hill behind Puning Temple has a killer view of the whole complex for free, just go around the left side of the temple grounds. the combo ticket tip is solid but check if you actually want to hit all the temples, some are pretty similar and you might be better off picking two you really like
yeah solid guide, one thing id say is the night market on Wulie Road is fun but the real move is the smaller food street that branches off it, like the alley behind the KFC. theres a couple ladies selling jianbing for like 6 yuan and its way better than the touristy stuff on the main strip. also for the combo ticket, make sure you actually wanna see the lesser temples cause i bought it once and only made it to two before i got templed out, wasted like 50 yuan lol
