🏯 Day 1: Imperial City
Start at 8:00 AM at the Citadel's Meridian Gate (Ngo Mon) to beat the heat and crowds. Entry costs VND 200,000 and includes the Forbidden Purple City and royal theaters. Allow 3 hours to wander the moats, temples, and gardens. Lunch nearby at Bun Bo Hue Muoi (20 Nguyen Cong Tru) for a steaming bowl at VND 50,000.

🚢 Afternoon Riverside Walk
After lunch, walk 15 minutes east to the Perfume River promenade. Visit the Ho Chi Minh Museum (7 Le Loi, open 7:30-11:30 AM and 1:30-5:00 PM, VND 40,000) for context on Vietnam's modern history. Then cross the Trang Tien Bridge on foot for sunset views. Grab a coconut ice cream at the riverside stalls for VND 20,000.

🍜 Evening Food Tour
At 6:00 PM, head to the Dong Ba Market area (Tran Hung Dao Street) for street food. Try banh khoai at Banh Khoai Hong Mai (79 Nguyen Binh Khiem) for VND 30,000 per crispy pancake. Finish with che (sweet soup) at Che Hem (31 Hung Vuong) for VND 15,000. A cyclo ride back to your hotel costs about VND 50,000.

πŸ›• Day 2: Royal Tombs
Rent a motorbike with driver (around VND 300,000 for half-day) or take a Grab car to the tombs south of the city. Start at 8:00 AM at Tu Duc Tomb (open 7:00 AM-5:30 PM, VND 100,000), then drive 10 minutes to Khai Dinh Tomb (VND 100,000). Both are within 7 km of the city center. Return by 12:30 PM for lunch at Quan Bun Bo Hue (13 Ly Thuong Kiet).

🌿 Afternoon Thien Mu Pagoda
After lunch, take a 20-minute Grab bike (about VND 40,000) to Thien Mu Pagoda (Huong Long Village, open 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, free entry). Climb the seven-story Phuoc Duyen Tower for river views. Then walk 10 minutes to the Tu Hieu Pagoda, a tranquil Zen monastery where monks still reside. Return to the city by 5:00 PM.

🍻 Evening Local Hangouts
For dinner, join locals at Quan Cam (34 Le Loi) for grilled pork skewers and cold beer, about VND 100,000 per person. Then head to the walking street on Nguyen Dinh Chieu (open 6:00 PM-11:00 PM on weekends) for live music and snacks. A taxi back to your hotel should cost under VND 60,000.

🚲 Day 3: Countryside Cycle
Rent a bicycle from your hotel (VND 80,000 per day) and cycle 8 km northeast to the Thanh Toan Bridge, a covered tile-roof bridge from 1776. Stop at the local market for fresh fruit. Continue 5 km to the Thuy Bieu village for a cooking class (VND 350,000, book ahead). Return by 3:00 PM to avoid traffic.

πŸ›οΈ Last-Minute Shopping
Spend your final hours at Dong Ba Market (Tran Hung Dao Street, open 5:00 AM-7:00 PM) for conical hats, silk scarves, and local coffee. Bargain to about 70% of the asking price. Pick up a jar of Hue's famous shrimp paste (mam tom) for VND 50,000. The airport is a 30-minute taxi ride (VND 250,000) from the center.

Banh canh ca loc on Pham Hong Thai, mornings only.

Day 1 is packed for the heat. I'd split the Citadel and the museum across two mornings, the riverside is brutal by 1pm. The bun bo at Muoi is worth the detour though.

the train station cafe across from Le Loi is a good rain backup, and the Dong Ba lunch stalls upstairs are cheaper than the street ones

🏯 Explore the Imperial City
Start at the Imperial Enclosure (Dai Noi) inside the Citadel, open daily from 8 AM to 5:30 PM; entry costs 200,000 VND. Go early to beat the heat and tour groups, and allow at least three hours to wander the moats, gates, and restored halls. Insider tip: the eastern side near the Thai Hoa Palace is often quieter in the late afternoon.

πŸ›Ά Cruise the Perfume River
Take a dragon boat from the Toa Kham pier (Le Loi Street) to Thien Mu Pagoda, about 30 minutes each way; a round trip with wait time costs around 100,000 VND per person. The best light is just before sunset, when the pagoda's seven tiers glow against the sky. Boats leave frequently between 8 AM and 5 PM, but negotiate the price and waiting time upfront.

πŸ›οΈ Discover Royal Tombs
The tombs of Tu Duc, Minh Mang, and Khai Dinh are the standout trio, each with a distinct atmosphere and setting. Tu Duc's tomb (5 km southwest) is the most serene, with a lake and pine forest; entry is 150,000 VND. Khai Dinh's tomb (10 km south) blends European and Asian architecture and offers sweeping views, while Minh Mang's tomb is the most symmetrical and photogenic. Rent a motorbike with driver for about 300,000 VND for a half-day tour covering all three.

🍜 Savor Hue's Cuisine
Hue is famous for its royal cuisine and street food, so don't miss bun bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup) at Quan Bun Bo Hue on 13 Ly Thuong Kiet, open from 6 AM to 10 AM for 40,000 VND. Try banh khoai (crispy pancake) at Banh Khoai Hong Mai, 110 Dinh Tien Hoang, where you can fold it yourself with herbs and peanut sauce for around 30,000 VND. For a sit-down meal, visit the family-run Hanh Restaurant at 11 Pho Duc Chinh, which serves a set menu of local specialties for 150,000 VND.

πŸŒ™ Experience the Night Market
The Hue Night Market along the Perfume River (Nguyen Dinh Chieu walking street) comes alive from 6 PM to 11 PM, selling souvenirs, clothing, and street food. It's a great spot to try grilled skewers, fresh fruit, and che (sweet soup) for under 20,000 VND. The nearby Trang Tien Bridge lights up at night, making it a perfect photo opportunity.

🚲 Cycle the Countryside
Rent a bicycle from your hotel for about 50,000 VND per day and explore the peaceful villages and rice paddies around Hue. Head to Thuy Bieu village (7 km from the center), known for its pomelo gardens and ancient houses, where you can join a cooking class for 250,000 VND. The flat terrain makes it easy for all levels, but start early to avoid the midday sun.

β˜• Cafe Culture and Relaxation
Hue has a thriving cafe scene, with spots like Cafe Muoi (142 Nguyen Hue) offering strong Vietnamese coffee and river views for around 25,000 VND. For a quieter atmosphere, visit the rustic Nha Toi Cafe (43 Nguyen Cong Tru), set in a traditional wooden house. Many cafes open from 7 AM to 10 PM, making them ideal for an afternoon break.

🎭 Catch a Cultural Show
The Royal Theatre (Duyet Thi Duong) inside the Citadel hosts traditional nha nhac (royal court music) performances daily at 9 AM, 10:30 AM, 2:30 PM, and 4 PM; tickets cost 100,000 VND. For a more contemporary experience, check the Hue Festival schedule (held biennially in even years, next in 2026) for outdoor concerts and art installations. Book tickets at the Citadel entrance or through your hotel.

Nice writeup, saving this for a return trip. One thing I'd add: the tomb circuit is way easier if you go Minh Mang first thing, it's the one that gets mobbed by mid-morning tour buses. Also the road out there passes the incense-making village of Thuy Xuan, worth a 20 min stop to watch them drying sticks by the roadside.

Gia Huy cafe on Pham Ngu Lao does a solid ca phe muoi and stays open late when most places shutter by 10.
