🍜 Must-Try Hue Dishes
Hue is the birthplace of bun bo Hue, a spicy beef noodle soup with lemongrass and chili oil that you'll find at nearly every street stall. Equally iconic is bun thit nuong, grilled pork with rice noodles and fresh herbs. Don't miss banh khoai, a crispy turmeric crepe stuffed with shrimp and pork, and nem lui, lemongrass skewers you wrap yourself at the table. For dessert, try che, a sweet soup with beans and coconut milk.

🍽️ Top Restaurants
For a sit-down bun bo Hue, head to Bun Bo Hue Muoi, at 45 Le Loi Street, where a bowl costs about 40,000 VND and the broth is rich with lemongrass. Banh Khoai Hong Mai at 78 Dinh Tien Hoang serves crispy banh khoai for around 30,000 VND, and you can wrap it in rice paper with herbs. For a modern take on royal cuisine, try Tinh Gia Vien at 7 Nguyen Sinh Cung, with set menus from 250,000 VND. Most restaurants open around 11:00 AM and close by 9:00 PM.

πŸ›΅ Street Food Stalls
The area around Dong Ba Market, on Tran Hung Dao Street, is packed with stalls selling bun bo Hue, banh canh, and fresh spring rolls from early morning until late afternoon. A bowl of bun bo Hue at a stall typically costs 25,000 to 35,000 VND. For nem lui, try the stalls on Nguyen Binh Khiem Street near the Perfume River, where you can grill your own skewers for about 50,000 VND per person. Evening street food clusters around the Imperial City's south gate on Le Duan Street.

🍲 Local Favorites
Locals love com hen, a humble rice dish with baby clams, at Com Hen Ba Doi on Han Thuyen Street, where a portion is around 20,000 VND. Another favorite is banh canh Nam Pho, a thick noodle soup with crab and pork, best sampled at the stalls on Chi Lang Street. For a quick snack, pick up banh ram it, a crispy rice cake topped with shrimp, from vendors near the Dong Ba Market for about 10,000 VND each. These spots are busiest at lunchtime, so arrive before noon.

πŸŒ™ Evening Food Spots
As the sun sets, the streets around the Truong Tien Bridge come alive with vendors selling grilled squid and fish balls on skewers. For a sit-down dinner, Nook Eatery at 34 Nguyen Tri Phuong Street offers a mix of Vietnamese and Western dishes with mains from 80,000 VND. The night market on Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street, open from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM, is great for cheap eats like banh xeo and fresh fruit smoothies. Many stalls stay open until midnight on weekends.

πŸ’° Budget Tips
Street food in Hue is incredibly affordable, with most dishes costing between 10,000 and 50,000 VND. A filling bowl of bun bo Hue at a local stall will set you back around 30,000 VND, while a sit-down meal at a mid-range restaurant averages 100,000 to 200,000 VND per person. Carry small bills (20,000 and 50,000 VND notes) as many vendors don't have change for large denominations. Tipping is not expected at street stalls but appreciated at nicer restaurants.

🚢 Food Neighborhoods
The area around Dong Ba Market is the epicenter of Hue's food scene, with countless stalls and small eateries within walking distance. For a more local vibe, explore the streets of Vy Da, particularly Nguyen Cong Tru Street, where you'll find family-run bun bo Hue spots. The Phu Hoi neighborhood, near the Perfume River, has a growing number of cafes and restaurants catering to travelers, including the popular Hanh Restaurant at 11 Pho Duc Chinh. Walking between these areas is easy, but you can also grab a cyclo or motorbike taxi for short hops.

🍹 Drinks and Desserts
Cool down with a glass of che ba mau, a three-color dessert drink with beans, jelly, and coconut milk, available at stalls around Dong Ba Market for about 10,000 VND. For coffee, try the famous salt coffee at Cafe Muoi at 2/54 Nguyen Cong Tru, where a glass costs 35,000 VND. Fresh sugarcane juice is sold on many street corners for 10,000 VND, and you can find smoothies and fruit shakes at the night market for around 20,000 VND. Most drink stalls operate from morning until early evening.

Bun bo at Dong Ba, before 8.

Good writeup. One thing missing: bun bo Hue is a breakfast food, so most stalls sell out by mid-morning. Try going around 7am for the best broth.

Banh canh ca loc on Pham Hong Thai, mornings only.

Day 1 is packed for the heat. I'd split the Citadel and the museum across two mornings, the riverside is brutal by 1pm. The bun bo at Muoi is worth the detour though.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

the train station cafe across from Le Loi is a good rain backup, and the Dong Ba lunch stalls upstairs are cheaper than the street ones
