🏰 Day 1: Historic Center
Start at Durham Cathedral (open 9:30am-4pm, free entry) and spend an hour exploring its Norman architecture. Walk five minutes to Durham Castle for a guided tour (11am, 1pm, 3pm, £5). Lunch at Flat White Kitchen on Saddler Street (mains £8-12). Afternoon: Palace Green Library and the Market Hall. Dinner at The Cellar Door (£15-20 mains).

🌳 Day 2: Riverside & University
Morning walk along the River Wear from Elvet Bridge to Prebends Bridge (20 minutes). Visit the Botanic Garden (open 10am-5pm, £5) and have lunch at the Garden Cafe. Afternoon: explore Durham University's historic buildings and the Oriental Museum (free, open 10am-5pm). Evening: drinks at The Swan & Three Cygnets (riverside pub).

🚌 Day 3: Day Trip to Beamish
Take the bus from Durham Bus Station to Beamish Museum (about 40 minutes, £6 return). Spend the morning exploring the open-air museum (entry £19.50 adults). Lunch at the museum's fish and chip shop. Return by 4pm for a final stroll along the river and dinner at Zen (Thai, £10-15 mains).

🚆 Getting Around
Durham is compact; most central sights are within a 15-minute walk. Use the Cathedral Bus (every 20 minutes, £1) for steep hills. For Beamish, take the X21 bus from Durham Bus Station (30-40 minutes). Taxis from the station to the cathedral cost about £5.

🍽️ Where to Eat
Flat White Kitchen (Saddler Street) for brunch. The Cellar Door (Elvet Bridge) for modern British. Zen (Court Lane) for Thai. For quick bites, try the Market Hall stalls (open 9am-5pm).

💷 Budget Tips
Many museums are free (Cathedral, Oriental Museum). A Durham Cathedral pass is £3 for a year. Lunch deals at pubs like The Shakespeare ( Saddler Street) start at £6.95. Student discounts are common with ID.

🛏️ Where to Stay
Central options: Hotel Indigo (riverside, from £120) or the Royal County Hotel (from £90). Budget: Durham University B&B rooms in summer (from £45). Book early for weekends.

📅 Best Time to Visit
May to September offers the best weather and longer opening hours. Avoid graduation weeks (late June) when hotels fill up. Check the cathedral's website for closure dates.

The Oriental Museum is actually a 20 min walk up Elvet Hill, not central, so budget that or grab the 42 bus.

Cathedral nave closed Sundays before 12:30.

good writeup, though I'd flag teh timetable risk on day 3. The X21 is fine but the last reliable return to Durham is mid afternoon, so don't cut it close at Beamish or you're on a pricey taxi. Also the cathedral has restricted visitor times during services, so check before you build the morning round it. Flat White gets rammed after 11, go early.

🏰 Explore the Cathedral
Durham Cathedral is the city's crown jewel and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entry is free, but donations are welcome, and you can climb the 325 steps to the tower for £5 (book ahead in summer). The cathedral is open Monday to Saturday 7:30am to 6pm and Sunday 12:30pm to 6pm. Insider tip: visit late afternoon when the light streams through the stained glass and crowds thin out.

🏯 Discover the Castle
Durham Castle, now part of University College, offers guided tours that take you through its Norman chapel and medieval great hall. Tours run daily at 1:15pm, 2:15pm, 3:15pm, and 4:15pm, cost £5 for adults, and must be booked online in advance. The castle is a 5-minute walk from the cathedral, so pair the two for a full day of history.

🚶 Walk the Riverside
The River Wear loops around the peninsula, and the riverside paths offer some of the best views of the cathedral and castle. Start at Elvet Bridge and follow the wooded banks towards Prebends Bridge, a 20-minute stroll that feels worlds away from the city. For a longer walk, continue to the Durham University Botanic Garden (open daily 10am to 5pm, £4 entry), which has a lovely cafe.

🛍️ Browse the Indoor Market
Durham's Victorian indoor market on Market Place is a great spot for local produce and crafts. It's open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, with a mix of butchers, bakers, and independent stalls. Don't miss the Friday farmers' market for fresh Northumbrian cheeses and baked goods.

🍽️ Taste Local Flavors
For a classic taste of the region, head to the Undercroft, a cozy cafe in the market that serves hearty Northumbrian breakfasts for under £8. The Cellar Door, on Saddler Street, offers modern British dishes with local ingredients, mains around £15. In the evening, the Angel Inn on Crossgate is a traditional pub with a good selection of local ales.

🎭 Catch a Show
The Gala Theatre on Millennium Place hosts a mix of drama, comedy, and film, with tickets often starting at £10. Check their schedule for touring productions and local performances. For something more intimate, the Durham Student Theatre puts on shows during term time at various venues across campus.

🌳 Relax in the Parks
Wharton Park, just behind the railway station, has a heritage centre, a cafe, and fantastic views over the city. It's free to enter and open daily from 8am to dusk. For a quieter escape, the Durham University Botanic Garden (admission £4) offers woodland walks and a glasshouse with tropical plants.

🚂 Getting Around
Durham is compact and walkable, but the hilly streets can be tiring. The cathedral bus (every 20 minutes, £1 fare) connects the station, market, and cathedral. Taxis from the station to the centre cost around £5, and the train to Newcastle takes just 15 minutes.

Skip the indoor market on a Sunday, half the stalls shut, and head to the riverside path by the bandstand instead.
