๐Ÿณ Where to Start
Begin your Durham food tour at the Durham Farmers' Market, held every Saturday from 8am to noon at 501 Foster Street. Here you can sample fresh produce, baked goods, and local cheese from vendors like Chapel Hill Creamery and Scratch Baking. For a classic Southern breakfast, head to Elmo's Diner at 776 9th Street, where a plate of biscuits and gravy costs around $8. Arrive early to beat the crowds, especially on weekends.

๐Ÿ– Barbecue and Southern Classics
Durham is proud of its barbecue heritage, and a visit to Backyard BBQ Pit at 5122 NC-55 is essential for pulled pork plates starting at $10. For fried chicken and soul food, try Saltbox Seafood Joint at 2637 Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard, where the daily catch is fried to order for about $12. Another local favorite is Mama Dip's at 408 West Rosemary Street, serving Southern comfort food like chicken and dumplings for around $14. Most of these spots are casual, so come hungry and ready to eat with your hands.

๐ŸŒฎ Street Food and Markets
The Durham Food Hall at 530 Foster Street is a great spot to sample multiple vendors under one roof, with tacos from Bartaco and arepas from La Buena Vida. For a quick bite, check out the food trucks parked at Durham Central Park on weekday afternoons, where you can grab a gourmet hot dog for $6 or a banh mi for $8. The Durham Night Market, held on the last Friday of each month from 6pm to 10pm, features rotating stalls with international street food. Bring cash for smaller vendors, though many now accept cards.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Fine Dining Picks
For a special night out, book a table at Herons at The Umstead Hotel, 100 Woodland Pond Drive, where the tasting menu runs about $125 per person. Another top choice is Mateo Bar de Tapas at 109 West Chapel Hill Street, offering Spanish-inspired small plates from $8 to $15. If you're after innovative Southern cuisine, try Piedmont at 401 Foster Street, with entrees around $28. Reservations are recommended for all three, especially on weekends.

๐ŸŒฑ Vegetarian and Vegan Eats
Durham has a strong plant-based scene, starting with Fiction Kitchen at 428 Foster Street, where vegan Carolina barbecue costs about $14. The Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe at 431 West Franklin Street serves vegetarian Indian dishes like dosas for $10 to $12. For a quick vegan lunch, check out Pure Soul at 4125 Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard, with bowls and sandwiches around $9. Most of these places offer gluten-free options, so ask your server.

๐Ÿฐ Sweet Treats and Bakeries
Don't miss the chance to try a slice of hummingbird cake at Scratch Baking at 111 Orange Street, priced at $5 per slice. For artisan pastries, head to Loaf at 601 West Main Street, where croissants and danishes cost $3 to $4 each. If you're in the mood for ice cream, The Parlour at 117 Market Street scoops unique flavors like salted caramel and lavender honey for $4 a scoop. Many bakeries sell out by mid-afternoon, so plan a morning visit.

๐Ÿบ Breweries and Food Trucks
Durham's brewery scene is booming, and places like Fullsteam Brewery at 726 Rigsbee Avenue often host food trucks in the evenings. A pint of local beer costs around $6, and you can pair it with a burger from the on-site truck for about $10. Another popular spot is Ponysaurus Brewing at 219 Hood Street, which has a rotating lineup of food trucks and a spacious patio. Check their social media for daily truck schedules.

๐Ÿ’ก Local Tips and Budget
To eat well on a budget, aim for lunch specials at places like Toast at 345 West Main Street, where sandwiches with a side salad are around $9. Many restaurants offer half-price appetizers during happy hour from 4pm to 6pm on weekdays. The Durham Bullpen, a free monthly food festival on the first Thursday at Durham Central Park, features $5 tasting plates from local chefs. Carry cash for tips and small purchases, and always check if a restaurant has a waitlist you can join online.

Solid list. One thing I'd add: Saltbox moved to a bigger spot on Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd and the fried shrimp is the move, not just the catch of the day. Also the Farmers' Market cheese vendors sell out early, so go before 9 if u want Chapel Hill Creamery.

good guide but nobody ever mentions the scotch eggs at Queeny's on Foster. tiny place, order at the counter, and the pimento cheese is worth the detour alone. go before noon on sat, it fills up fast.

Durham is compact; most central sights are within a 15-minute walk. Use the Cathedral Bus (every 20 minutes, ยฃ1) for steep hills. For Beamish, take the X21 bus from Durham Bus Station (30-40 minutes). Taxis from the station to the cathedral cost about ยฃ5.

The Oriental Museum is actually a 20 min walk up Elvet Hill, not central, so budget that or grab the 42 bus.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Cathedral nave closed Sundays before 12:30.

good writeup, though I'd flag teh timetable risk on day 3. The X21 is fine but the last reliable return to Durham is mid afternoon, so don't cut it close at Beamish or you're on a pricey taxi. Also the cathedral has restricted visitor times during services, so check before you build the morning round it. Flat White gets rammed after 11, go early.
