I don't usually have allergies but have been sneezing and eyes watering like crazy today, can barely concentrate on anything. This happens to me 4-5 timea a year.

I've been told by multiple Japanese coworkers and friends that it must be the temperature change (how it got so much colder recently compared to a few days ago). I have never heard of this sort of allergy growing up in America and just always assumed I was allergic to some obscure pollen carried in by the wind on days with certain wind directions. Is this a real thing???

If this is the case shouldn't we all be getting this "allergy" when we step into an air conditioned store during the summer, stepping into the shower, etc.? It doesn't make much sense to me.

fwiw you might also be dealing with the sudden drop in humidity that comes with these cold fronts. tokyo went from like 70% humidity to 40% in two days last week, and dry air alone can make your eyes water and nose run even without the temp swing. a humidifier in your room at night helped me way more than I expected, plus those eyewash drops from the pharmacy (the single-use ones, not the bottles with preservatives) for when you're out.

it's called 寒暖差アレルギー (kandansa allergy) and yeah it's real but it's not a true allergy, it's your nasal nerves being dramatic about the temp swing. the reason it doesn't happen every time you hit an air conditioned store is because the change has to be pretty sudden and big, like 7+ degrees celsius in a day. that's why it hits when a cold front rolls in but not when you step into a convenience store

Some of what you described is vasomotor rhinitis, but there's also a good chance you're catching the tail end of the first cedar pollen wave. That stuff lingers in the air even after it's gotten colder. Check the pollen forecast on the weather news, if the cedar count was high a few days ago and then dropped, your symptoms can lag by a day or two.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
