The photos I've seen are stunning, those little boats gliding through the waterways, past crumbling brickwork... it looks magical. My question is: are there any guided tours that focus specifically on exploring these canals? I'm not just interested in the major tourist spots

fwiw theres a guy named Lek who runs tours out of his little shop near Wat Mahathat, no website just a sign in Thai and English. He focuses on the back klongs where the lotus farms are, not the main river. I did his sunset tour last year and we spent like 2 hours weaving through canals youd never find on your own, past old monastery ruins half-swallowed by trees. Cost me 800 baht for a private boat, way better than the group tours that stick to the touristy bits near the temples

The canals you're seeing in photos are mostly around the southern part of the island, past Wat Phutthaisawan like others mentioned. But if you want something with a bit more structure without the tourist crowds, look up Boat Tour Ayutthaya on Facebook. A woman named Noi runs it, she speaks good English and takes small groups through the klongs behind Wat Na Phra Men, where the water hyacinths get thick and you can see old Khmer-style prang foundations poking out of the mud. She charges 1,000 baht for a two-hour private trip and she'll stop at a floating noodle shop run by her aunt, which is about as local as it gets.

i'd skip the tour companies entirely and head straight to the pier behind wat phutthaisawan, it's a bit off the main temple circuit but that's where the real canal life starts. the boat guys there will take u past stilted wooden houses and under low bridges where the lotus pads pile up, it's way quieter than the tourist zone near the train station. aim for late afternoon when the light hits the brickwork and the water gets glassy, the whole place turns gold and you'll have most of the klongs to yourself. bring cash, the old timers don't do cards, and expect to pay around 600-700 baht for an hour

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
