Heard it's insane. My friend who lived there for a year swore the street food scene is next level, but he also said navigating the smaller sois was a nightmare. Seriously, he almost got lost trying to find that legendary mango sticky rice stall. Any tips on avoiding getting completely and utterly turned around? I'm picturing myself wandering around for hours, surrounded by delicious smells but unable to find anything...and then starving.

ngl the best way to not get lost is to just pick a landmark and work your way back to it. i always use the big golden wat at the end of soi 16 as my anchor point, everything loops around that eventually. for the mango sticky rice, skip the famous one tbh, the stall on soi 14 next to the 7-eleven does it better and with less queue, just look for the old guy with the cart and the yellow umbrella. if u do wander, just follow the smell of grilled pork, that'll always lead u back to a main road

tbh the trick is to not fight getting lost, just embrace it with a plan. pick one soi and commit to walking it end to end, then double back. the best stuff is always in the middle where the crowds thin out, like that grilled river prawn spot on soi 22 that no one talks about. for the mango sticky rice, skip the tourist trap and hit the one on soi 18 near the old Chinese shrine, the lady uses coconut cream from a vendor down the street and it's noticeably richer. and honestly, if you're starving, just flag down a motorbike taxi, 30 baht and they'll drop you at any major intersection, way easier than wrestling with google maps in those narrow sois

The key is to use the canal path that runs parallel to Charoen Rat. It's called Khlong Bang Phlat and there's a walking path on one side that cuts through the sois without the traffic chaos. You'll pop out right at the intersection of soi 18 and the main road, which is where the best grilled squid cart operates from 5pm until they sell out. And for that mango sticky rice, the one your friend mentioned is on soi 20 but the lady moves her cart between two spots depending on the day, so look for the red and white checked tablecloth rather than a fixed address.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
