Anyway, I found this weird, almost glowing, fruit in the produce section. Looked kinda like a mango, but orange-ish. The label was all in Thai, and the staff couldn't really speak English. I bought it anyway, super curious. Back at the hotel, I cautiously tried a small bite... and it tasted like...sunshine? Seriously. Like, concentrated summer sunshine. Anyone know what that was?! I should of taken a picture...

could be a "ma praew" actually, theyre these tiny orange fruits that show up in the wet markets around june. maxvalu sometimes stocks em from the orchard in nakhon pathom.

the taste is like a floral mango but way more intense, almost like eating a flower that got hit by a heatwave. next time try it with a bit of salt and chili, thats how the vendors at or tor kor market serve it

tbh you prob found a lam yai or longan relative, the orange ones are less common here. maxvalu on sukhumvit soi 39 has a weird import section that gets stuff from up north sometimes.

next time check the sticker for a PLU code, that's universal. also slice it thin and throw it in a papaya salad, the sweetness cuts thru the lime real nice.

honestly that sounds more like a nang fa or a "sala" fruit to me. maprang is more yellow and tart, while sala has that orange glow and tastes like pure honey and sunshine. you can find them at the big markets too, but MaxValu has em imported from the south sometimes.

next time just google lens the thai text on the sticker, it usually pulls up the name. also peel it first, the skin is bitter as hell even if it looks edible.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
