It wasn't on any of my maps, but locals pointed me towards it. The road itself was pretty nondescript, but the little side streets branching off it were amazing! I found hidden shrines, tiny family-run noodle shops, and some seriously cool street art. My question is: does anyone know of any specific local legends or stories connected to Si Ayutthaya Road or the smaller streets nearby? I'm hoping to uncover some hidden history on my next trip!

Si Ayutthaya Road doesn't really have a single famous legend attached to it, but the area around it was part of the old city's outer ring, where traders and artisans lived. The smaller streets you found, especially around the side canals, were historically where Chinese and Portuguese merchants set up shop in the 16th century. You might notice some of the shrines have a mix of Thai and Chinese iconography. I'd suggest asking the older vendors at the noodle shops about the "khlong" near Wat Phanan Choeng, they might have stories about a sunken temple there that resurfaces during drought years.

yeah so theres a spot called ban khu mueang, its a tiny museum literally in someones house near the end of si ayutthaya road. the old lady who runs it is like 80 and her family dug up all this old pottery and buddha heads from their backyard over the years. she told me the whole street used to be part of a canal network that connected to the river, you can still see where the old docks were if you look at the pavement cracks. the museum is donation only and she'll make you tea while telling stories about the merchants who lived there. its easy to miss because theres no sign in english, just a wooden door with a faded number 17 on it

ngl the best thing around there is the old portuguese settlement site just off Si Ayutthaya Road, its basically a field with some foundation stones now but theres a tiny museum shack run by this one monk. he showed me pottery shards they dug up from the 1500s, said the ground is basically a garbage dump of broken plates from when the portuguese were here, some of them have these blue floral patterns youd never see in thai ceramics. if you go behind the school on soi 3 youll find a concrete cross marking where their church used to be, its completely overgrown but locals still leave flowers there on all saints day

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
