Bangkok's Hidden Canals?

I've read about the canals and how they're a bit... neglected. My question is: are there any safe and interesting khlongs (canals) still accessible for a casual visitor to explore, perhaps by boat? I'm hoping for a bit more than just seeing trash floating by. I really want to experience the older, quieter side of Bangkok, away from the main tourist areas. I'm picturing quiet water, maybe some local life glimpsed from the canals, not a full-blown tourist boat tour. Any tips on finding a less crowded, more authentic experience would be amazing!

honestly the best canal spot i've found is khlong mon in thonburi. it's off the beaten path enough that most tourists don't bother, and there's a little wooden pier near wat khun chan where you can hire a local boat for like 200 baht an hour. the houses along there are raised on stilts with gardens spilling into the water, and you'll see grandmas washing dishes and kids jumping in. just be ready for some murky water and the occasional plastic bag, it's not a postcard but it's real life here. if you want to extend it, tell the boat guy to head towards khlong bang luang, there's a small artist community and a coffee shop right on the water that does a decent iced coffee for 40 baht

Khlong Bang Waek on the Thonburi side is a solid option. It's a bit further south than the usual routes so the tourist boats don't go there, and the public longtail service runs until about 5pm. You'll float past old teak houses, a few temples, and some fruit orchards that are still active. Grab a boat from the pier near Wat Nang Nong, it's about 50 baht for a ride and you can wave one down from the bank if you see it coming.

one spot that doesnt get mentioned much is khlong lat mayom on the thonburi side. it's a bit of a maze back there but the floating market there is mostly for locals, not tourists, and you can rent a paddleboat for like 60 baht and just drift around the back canals. the water's not pristine but you'll see monks walking along the banks and old wooden shophouses that've been there for decades. if you go on a weekday it's dead quiet, barely anyone around

another option is khlong phadung krung kasem, which runs through the old city area. it's not as rural but it's got this gritty charm with crumbling walls and stray cats lounging by the edge. the public boat runs from near banglamphu to hua lamphong station, costs like 15 baht, and you'll see the backside of old buildings and temples that most people miss from the street. just sit near the front and let the breeze hit you, it's a solid way to kill an hour without any tourist nonsense

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
