I swear, I spent an hour just wandering the aisles. Anyway, I found this insanely delicious mango sticky rice in the prepared foods section. The best I've ever had, seriously. But...the packaging was completely in Thai. No English, nada. I'm dying to know what all the ingredients are because I want to recreate it. Anyone know where I could find a translation of that specific label? Or a recipe? It was near the fresh produce section, if that helps.

I would just take a photo of the label and walk it over to the deli counter at the Asiatique branch. The staff there are used to tourists asking about the prepared food, and they have a laminated card with English names for everything. That specific mango sticky rice is almost certainly made with the same coconut cream they sell in the big tin cans near the rice aisle, the one with the golden label. The trick they use is mixing a tiny bit of the thick cream that rises to the top back into the rice after it's cooked, which gives it that glossy finish you can't get from just stirring it in.

fwiw maxvalu usually sources their prepared stuff from local suppliers around the branch. the one by the river prob gets theirs from a small operation in talad noi. if you go back and ask the staff nicely, sometimes they'll let u peek at the bulk packaging the rice comes in, that's where the real supplier info is.

i've had luck just screenshotting thai labels and dropping them into the translate app on my phone. it's not perfect but you'll get the gist of what's in there. the coconut cream they use is usually from a brand called aroy-d, the one in the silver carton. that stuff is way richer than what you find in normal supermarkets

honestly i think ur overcomplicating it. that mango sticky rice at maxvalu is prob just standard thai street food recipe with a few tweaks. the ingredients label is mostly gonna say glutinous rice, coconut milk, sugar, salt, mango. maybe pandan leaf if they got fancy.

if u really want the exact label translated, snap a photo and post it on pantip.com's food board. thai housewives there love helping with this stuff. or just walk into any maxvalu and ask a staff member near the deli counter, they usually have a few who speak basic english.

but tbh the real secret is probably the coconut cream they use. try making it with chaokoh brand coconut milk and add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness. that's what most local places do.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
