Bangkok's Charoen Rat Road Mysteries

I've heard it's a fascinating mix of old and new, and I'm really interested in the street food scene there. I saw some pictures of amazing-looking grilled seafood stalls, but also some really old buildings that looked almost abandoned. My question is: are there any hidden, less touristy food stalls along Charoen Rat that locals frequent? I want to avoid the usual tourist traps and experience something more authentic. I'm all about finding places with character. I'm hoping for those hidden gems people only know about through word of mouth...

Walk a bit past the BTS Saphan Khwai stop toward the river end, and you'll hit a stretch where the street food stalls are mostly plastic tables and folding chairs. There's a woman there who does grilled river prawns with a tamarind dipping sauce that's leagues better than anything near the tourist piers. She's been there for decades, no sign, just a charcoal grill and a stack of plates. If you go around 6pm, you'll see the same faces ordering the same thing every night. That's your spot.

Honestly just go later at night, like 10pm or later. The charcoal grilled squid stalls start popping up around then, especially near the intersection with Charoen Nakhon. There's this one spot run by an older couple, no chairs even, just you standing there eating while they fan the coals. They do this spicy dipping sauce that'll clear your sinuses. Also check out the little alley behind the old Wat Charoen Rat temple complex, there's a guy who's been making the same crispy pork belly since before the BTS existed. Just follow the sound of the cleaver hitting the block

The seafood stall the other person mentioned is great, but if you want something different, head a bit deeper into soi Charoen Rat 7. There's a small Muslim-run place that does an incredible spicy beef soup with morning glory, no English sign, just a green awning. It's open for breakfast and lunch only, usually sold out by 1pm. The owner's family has been there since the 70s, and you'll see motorbike taxi drivers lined up for it every morning.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
