I've heard mixed things about their reliability past a certain mileage. My uncle had one that lasted forever, but a friend's had all sorts of problems after 150k miles. Is there a specific year or mileage range within that generation I should steer clear of, or is it really just a crapshoot? I'm really hoping to avoid a money pit. I've been saving for ages and a decent Corolla would really suit my budget.

one thing nobody mentioned yet - the 2008 corolla in thailand had two different engine options for that year, the 1.6L and the 1.8L. the 1.6 is actually more reliable long term because it's simpler, less things to go wrong. i'd take a higher mileage 1.6 over a lower mileage 1.8 any day

also check if the car was originally registered in bangkok or upcountry. cars that spent their life in isaan or the north tend to have less rust and less wear on the aircon system because the humidity is lower. you can tell from the first two digits of the license plate, 1-4 is bangkok area

if you do go for it, find a shop that specializes in these altis models for maintenance. there's a guy on rama 2 soi 34 who only works on toyotas and charges half what the dealer does for the same work, just search for "อู่โตโยต้า" on google maps near where you live

ngl the bangkok traffic is a bigger factor than the mileage itself. these corollas are tough but sitting in bumper to bumper on petchaburi or ratchada for years takes a toll on the cooling system and transmission way more than highway driving would. if you find one that was used mostly for longer trips out to pattaya or ayutthaya instead of city commuting thats a better bet

also check the tires for weird wear patterns. if theyre uneven it could mean the suspension bushings are shot which is common on these after 15 years. replacing all four control arms at a decent shop outside the dealer will run you about 8k-10k baht so factor that in if you hear any knocking over bumps

Honestly, 2008 Corollas are a bit of a gamble at this point. 150k miles is pushing it for any car, regardless of reputation. Your friend's experience isn't unusual for a car that age and mileage, things start to wear out. The fact your uncle's lasted forever suggests good maintenance, which is KEY with used cars.

Get a pre-purchase inspection from a good mechanic. Don't just rely on the seller's word. That inspection will tell you more than any forum post ever could. Look for things like rust, especially under the car and around wheel wells in @Bangkok's humidity. Check the service history meticulously. A well-maintained 2008 Corolla can still be a reliable car, but it needs to be checked thoroughly. Don't rush into anything; your savings deserve that much.

Yeah, that makes total sense. I hadn't thought about the humidity factor in Bangkok; that's a great point about the rust. My uncle was meticulous about maintenance, practically lived in the garage with that thing! So, a pre-purchase inspection is definitely happening. It feels like such a small investment compared to potentially buying a lemon, you know? Thanks for the advice!

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
