The street food was AMAZING, seriously, the best Pad See Ew of my LIFE. But I noticed something...a lot of the smaller sois, the side streets, seemed kinda...quiet. Like, almost deserted during the day. Are these sois mostly residential, or is there something else going on there that tourists don't usually see? I'd love to explore them more next time, but I'm a little hesitant to wander in alone.

Yeah, those quieter sois off Sukhumvit are mostly residential. Lots of apartments, smaller businesses catering to locals, stuff like that. Nothing particularly secret going on, just everyday Bangkok life. During the day, it's pretty calm, but things definitely liven up at night.

If you're hesitant to explore alone, consider going with a friend or even joining a walking tour focused on local neighborhoods, those often venture off the main drags. Or, just pick one soi that looks interesting and pop in for a coffee or a snack at a local shop, that's a good way to get a feel for the place without feeling totally lost. You'll probably find some cool little cafes and street food stalls you'd never stumble upon otherwise. Just use your common sense and be aware of your surroundings, like you would anywhere.

That's really helpful, thanks! I hadn't thought about a walking tour, that sounds like a great way to get a feel for the area without getting completely overwhelmed. I'm not usually too worried about exploring alone in @Bangkok, but having a local guide would definitely add a lot. The coffee and snack idea is good too, a much less intense way to dip my toes in than just wandering aimlessly. I appreciate the practical advice!

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
