I'm really keen to explore them by boat, but worried about getting lost! Anyone got any tips for navigating the khlongs without ending up hopelessly adrift? Or, even better, recommendations for a trustworthy boatman who knows the area well? I wanna see the real Bangkok, you know?

fwiw the best way to tackle Mit Samphan is to go early like 7am before the tourist boats start buzzing around. The khlongs are way quieter and you'll see locals doing their morning shopping from boat vendors. I'd suggest just walking the main soi first to get your bearings, then hop on a boat at the small pier near the 7-Eleven on Soi Charoen Krung 32. The boat guys there are usually the same families who've lived in the area for decades, they'll charge around 200 baht for a 20 minute loop and can point out the old wooden houses that are prob hundreds of years old. just dont expect them to speak much english, but pointing and smiling works fine

Honestly, the orange flag thing is a solid tip, and the old guy near the bike rental is legit. I'd add that if you want to avoid the tourist markup entirely, just walk a bit deeper into the soi before you flag anyone down. The guys closer to the main road know you're a visitor and price accordingly.

The real trick with Mit Samphan is that the khlongs there don't really connect to the main Chao Phraya river routes, so you're mostly looking at long-tail boats that just do short loops. Walk down to the pier near Soi Saman Chai around 9am and you'll find the old guys with the wooden boats, they usually charge about 300 baht for a 30 minute spin through the back canals. I'd skip the guys hanging around the main market entrance, they tend to quote double for tourists. If you want to see the real deal, ask for a ride to the canal market at Wat Sai, it's about 20 minutes by boat and way less crowded than the floating markets you see on Instagram.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
