Seriously, I got lost like three times. Found the weirdest things, too, like industrial-sized bags of potato chips. Anyway, my question is: what's the deal with the staff? They all seemed to be speaking some secret language to each other, whispering and pointing. I felt like I was in some sort of bizarre, wholesale spy movie. It was kinda unsettling. Anyone else experienced this super-secretive vibe at Makro?

the whispering thing is just them speaking burmese or lao tbh. a lot of the warehouse staff are migrant workers and they stick to their own languages when talking to each other. the pointing is usually about where to move pallets or which aisle needs restocking. next time just wave and smile, they're actually pretty friendly once you acknowledge them

fwiw i think it's partly just the warehouse vibe amplifying normal stuff. those places have insane turnover so the staff are constantly in motion, plus the acoustics in there make every whisper sound like a conspiracy. also if you go during off-peak hours like a tuesday morning you'll notice they're way more relaxed and chatty with each other

yeah the whole "secret language" thing is just them switching between thai, burmese, and lao depending on who's nearby. i used to work at the makro on charan sanitwong and we had a mix of staff from all over, it's just faster to talk in your own dialect when you're coordinating pallets or checking expiry dates. the pointing is almost always about where to drop stock or which aisle needs a refill. if you really want to break the ice, next time you're at the checkout just ask the cashier where they keep the giant jars of pickled garlic, they'll light up and point you to aisle 8 every time

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
