Toyota Camry Reliability?

Everyone says they're practically indestructible, but my uncle's 2005 model had a radiator hose burst in the middle of nowhere. So, what's the real story? Are there specific years or models I should avoid, or are the horror stories just a tiny fraction of overall Camry sales? My budget is tight, so I need to make sure this thing doesn't leave me stranded somewhere between Poland and the Czech Republic.

The 2007-2009 Camry with the 2.4L engine is the one to skip, that oil consumption issue is real and not just internet noise. For your budget, a 2012 or later 2.5L is the sweet spot, you can find decent ones around Bangkok for 250,000-350,000 baht if you check the classifieds on Kaidee or Taladrod.

Before you leave, go see Mr. A at the Toyota specialist shop on Pradiphat Road near Soi 16. He'll do a full inspection and replace all the coolant hoses, belts, and the water pump for maybe 8,000 baht total. That's the main thing that leaves people stuck, not the engine itself.

The Camry will eat up those Polish and Czech highways just fine, those cars are everywhere in Europe for a reason. Just swap out the rubber bits before you go and you'll be set.

honestly a camry is a solid choice for that drive but you gotta be realistic about a 20 year old car. the 2007-2011 models had some oil consumption issues with the 2.4L engine so avoid those if u can. the 2012+ ones are rock solid.

for a bangkok to berlin trip id look for a 2014 or newer if ur budget allows. the cooling system is always the weak point on any old car so replace the radiator hoses and thermostat before u leave from bkk. there's a good shop on rama 4 near the thailand post office that'll do a full inspection for like 1500 baht.

honestly your uncles hose burst is just bad luck but its exactly why you should replace all rubber parts before a 10k km drive. the camry is boring but itll get you to berlin if you prep it right

A Camry is a fine choice but you're overthinking the year. The real issue is that any car driven from Bangkok to Berlin will need serious prep. The heat and humidity here destroy rubber faster than in Europe. Your uncle's hose burst is a common story because people in Bangkok don't think about replacing hoses until they crack.

Instead of fixating on model years, spend your money on a full rubber replacement before you leave. There's a parts shop on Charoen Krung Road near the Saphan Taksin BTS that sells genuine Toyota hoses and belts for about half the dealer price. Have a mechanic swap everything rubber in the engine bay, flush the coolant, and replace the thermostat. That costs maybe 5,000 baht total and eliminates the most common roadside failures.

The Camry will handle the autobahn fine but check the steering rack boots and suspension bushings too. Bangkok's potholes and speed bumps wear those out faster than highway driving ever will. A 2010 or newer with the 2.5L engine is your safest bet, just avoid the 2007-2009 2.4L models that burn oil.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
