Charoen Rat Rd Food Stalls?

I'm heading to @Bangkok next month and plan on spending a good chunk of time exploring Charoen Rat Road, specifically the street food scene. I've seen pictures, but they don't quite capture the vibe. What's the best way to avoid the tourist traps and find those truly amazing, hidden-ish food stalls that only locals know about? Like, I'm not looking for Michelin stars or anything, just authentic, delicious stuff that'll make me say "wow"... I should probably brush up on my Thai phrases too, huh?

yeah the guy above is right about just wandering but i'll add something specific - go to the stretch between soi charoen rat 7 and soi charoen rat 11 around 6pm. there's a lady with a yellow cart who does grilled pork skewers with this sticky tamarind glaze that's insane. like 10 baht each. also the fried chicken place next to the 7-eleven near wat kanlayanamit is legit, old school thai style with crispy skin and that garlic pepper dip. and yes learn at least "mai pet" (not spicy) unless u want ur mouth on fire lol

The trick on Charoen Rat is to skip the main drag entirely for dinner and head into the little soi that runs behind Wat Kanlayanamit temple, the one that dead-ends at the river. There's a family-run boat noodle stall there with no sign in English, just a red awning and steam coming off a giant pot. They've been doing it for forty years, and the broth has this deep, smoky pork flavor you won't find anywhere else. Brush up on "sen lek" for thin noodles and "sen yai" for wide ones, that's more useful than "delicious" when you're ordering.

imo the best strategy is to show up hungry and let the crowd guide you, but specifically on charoen rat, look for the stalls that only have one or two items on the menu. that's usually a sign they've perfected that dish over years. there's a guy near the wat kanlayanamit entrance who only sells grilled squid with this spicy green dipping sauce, no sign, just a cart with squid hanging off it. he's there around 5pm and it's like 20 baht per skewer. learning "mai ow naam" (no ice) is clutch if you're buying drinks from the street stalls, they always try to fill the cup with ice first

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
