Toyota Corolla's Longevity?

Seriously, it's seen more sunrises than I have. I've replaced a few parts, but the engine...that thing's a beast. My question is, what's the secret to these things lasting so long? Is there some hidden engineering trick Toyota used back then they don't anymore? Or is it just pure dumb luck and a whole lotta care?

ngl the real secret is the fuel system on those old K-series engines. the carburetor is a mechanical Aisan unit that just dumps fuel in without any of the modern sensors that fail and send bad signals. even if the carb gets dirty you can rebuild it with a $20 kit from the parts shop on Phra Athit Road in about an hour. try that with a modern direct injection system that costs 3000 baht just to diagnose. plus the lack of a catalytic converter means it breathes easy even if the engine is a little tired

You've got a K-Series engine in there, which is basically the same block Toyota used in forklifts and industrial pumps for years. It's not glamorous, but it was designed to run all day at a constant RPM without breaking a sweat. The real trick is the valve clearance adjustment, which most people ignore. If you check it every 20,000 km, that engine will outlast the rust on the body. I've seen a few of these around the shops on Charoen Krung Road, and the ones that still run like new all have one thing in common, the owner actually opens the hood once in a while.

The secret is partly the fact that Toyota sourced their cast iron from a specific Japanese foundry back then. That block in your '78 is tougher than what they use now because it was poured with higher nickel content, which handles heat cycles better. I've seen guys at the swap meet on Ratchadaphisek Road pull those engines apart after 400k km and the cylinder walls still have visible crosshatching. Your grandpa keeping the oil changed on schedule is the other half of it, but the metal itself is genuinely better than what you'd get in a new one.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
