I've read about the floating markets nearby, but I'm curious about the daily life along the canals themselves, are there still many residents using the waterways for transportation or commerce? I saw some photos of amazing longtail boat rides, but I'm worried about getting lost...or worse, finding out the "secret" canals are only accessible to locals. Any tips for navigating them safely and respectfully?

The khlongs around Mit Samphan are still pretty active, though maybe not as much as in the past. You'll see people using boats for daily commutes, definitely. Small businesses operating along the canals, food stalls, little shops selling produce... it's a real working waterway. Longtail boat rides are a great way to see it all, but definitely agree about getting lost. Hiring a guide for at least part of your exploration is a good idea; they can help you navigate safely and respectfully, and point out things you'd never notice on your own. Don't be afraid to ask locals for directions, most are happy to help if you try a little Thai (even a simple "Sawasdee krap/ka"). Just be mindful of private property and don't barge into areas that seem closed off. Enjoy! It's a really unique experience.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
