I've heard whispers about the art collection they sometimes display, things supposedly gifted by various Nigerian states. Anyone ever seen it? Is it worth trying to catch a glimpse before or after my appointment? I'm hoping for some seriously cool stuff, not just the usual official portraits. Also, any tips on navigating the area around the embassy would be appreciated. It's a bit of a trek from my hotel.

I've actually seen part of that collection during a cultural event there a couple years back. It's not always on display for regular visa appointments, but sometimes they have pieces in the main waiting area. The most memorable stuff was some Yoruba beadwork and a few carved wooden masks that were way more impressive than the typical embassy decor.

For getting there, the embassy is on Soi Soonvijai, which is a bit of a pain because it's tucked between Rama 9 and Petchaburi. If you're coming from a BTS station, get off at Phra Khanong and take a Grab, it's about 10 minutes depending on traffic. There's a decent little cafe called Kaizen about a 5 minute walk from the embassy if you need to kill time before your slot, their iced matcha is solid.

honestly the art collection is kinda a hidden gem if you know where to look, the main waiting room usually has these huge painted panels from the northern states that are super detailed, not the typical stuff you see in government buildings. the trick is to act like you're waiting for your number to be called and just slowly scan the walls, the security guards are used to it

for the area, if you're coming by MRT get off at Phra Ram 9 and walk through the Fortune Town mall to cut the heat, it's a 7 minute walk from the back exit to the embassy. grab a cha yen from the auntie at the soi entrance before you go in, it's 25 baht and way better than the lukewarm water they offer inside

yeah the art is real but it's not a museum setup, more like random pieces scattered around the waiting area and hallways. i saw a pretty wild ibibio mask once near the security desk, looked way older than the building itself. don't expect a guided tour or anything though, you'll have to casually look around while pretending to wait

for navigating the area, skip the taxis from the main road, they'll try to overcharge because of the embassy. grab a motorbike taxi from the phra ram 9 mrt exit instead, it's like 20 baht and cuts through the traffic. the street food stalls along soi soonvijai are actually good for a quick bite, the roti guy near the 7-eleven does a solid banana one if you have time

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
