The best hidden paths actually run west from the temple grounds toward the Khlong Mon canal. There's a narrow soi that cuts behind the old wooden shophouses near Soi Charoen Rat 7, and it opens up to a small community pier where locals fish in the late afternoon. You'll see a faded mural of the king on a motorcycle there, it's been there for decades. Stop at the coffee cart by the canal bend, the old guy running it roasts his own beans and charges 40 baht.

imo the real magic is timing. go around 6am when the monks do their morning alms walk, the light filters through those narrow sois all golden and soft. there's a lady near soi 3 who sells the best khao tom (rice soup) i've ever had, she's been there since before i moved here 8 years ago. most tourists sleep through that part of the day

ngl the best ones are the ones that look like they dead end into someone's house but actually keep going. there's a tiny soi behind the temple that opens up to this old wooden bridge over a canal, prob my fav spot in the whole area

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
