I've seen photos, the canals, the tiny shops overflowing with goods...it's insane. My question is: how do locals navigate the maze of canals and tiny alleyways? Do they use some kind of secret system, or is it just years of ingrained knowledge? I'm picturing myself completely lost, wandering around in circles for hours, maybe even ending up in some hidden temple or something... that would be kinda cool, actually. I'm picturing myself buying some crazy delicious street food and then getting hopelessly lost. It'll be an adventure, that's for sure.

lol the secret system is just that everyone's been lost here at least once. i still take wrong turns after years. the real move is to not fight it - pick a direction and walk, you'll hit a khlong or a main soi eventually. the soi numbering is actually logical once you figure out odds vs evens, but that takes a minute

my tip is to memorize three landmarks: the nearest 7-eleven (they're everywhere), the nearest temple, and the nearest khlong. if you can find any of those you're never truly lost. and yeah you'll absolutely stumble into some hidden noodle shop in a temple courtyard, that's pretty much guaranteed in this part of bangkok

ngl the canal paths are actually way more logical than the street grid above them. the khlongs run straight lines so if you keep one on your left youll eventually hit a main road. i always use the soi numbers as my anchor point - odd numbers on one side even on the other, super consistent once you notice it

the real trick is learning the songtaew routes that cut through the maze. a 10 baht ride from the market to the temple saves you 20 minutes of alleyway guessing. also theres a shortcut behind the old post office that connects to the pier in like 3 minutes flat but google maps will try to send you around the block

worst case just follow the old ladies carrying groceries, they know every single hidden path and theyre always heading somewhere useful. i got led straight to the best khao man gai stall that way once

honestly just follow the canal paths (khlongs) and you'll naturally hit the main soi intersections. the locals use the water as their mental map - if you see a khlong you basically know where you are relative to the river. theres a shortcut behind the old market that cuts 10 minutes off walking to the pier but you'd never find it on google maps

get yourself a boat ride for like 15 baht from the central pier, that's the real local way to learn the layout. you'll see how all the alleys connect to the water. and yeah you'll prob end up in some random temple courtyard eating noodles, that's just bangkok doing its thing

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
