I think the real magic of that area is how the whole thing shifts depending on when you go. Soi Cowboy before 8 PM has a completely different energy, more like a neon-lit market street where you can actually hear the music from the bars instead of just the touts. The soi dog that sleeps outside the Tilac bar is basically a local landmark at this point, he's been there for years.
You hit on something interesting there. A lot of people write off Soi Cowboy as purely touristy, but the side sois off Sukhumvit between Asok and Nana have some proper old-school Thai restaurants that have been there for decades. Try the corner spot on Sukhumvit 21 near the footbridge, they do a crispy pork belly that beats anything you'll find in the neon glow. If you want the glitter without the crowds, walk through Soi Cowboy around 6 PM when the bars are just opening and the touts are still finishing their rice.
Soi Cowboy's definitely a... character builder. Found some surprisingly decent street food tucked away in the side streets near there, though. It's a whole other world compared to the main drag. If you're looking for something less...intense, Nana Plaza is another option, but it's a similar vibe, just on a bigger scale. Maybe try exploring areas further from the tourist hotspots for a more authentic Bangkok experience. You'll find calmer areas with amazing food, just be prepared to navigate a bit!

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
